The Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer grammar school (short: KaiFU or Kaifu ) is located on Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer in the Hamburg district of Eimsbüttel . The upper level of the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer grammar school is taught in the "Eimsbüttler model" together with the Helene Lange grammar school. The upper school classes mainly take place together with the Helene-Lange-Gymnasium in the nearby building of the former Bismarck-Gymnasium.

history

The school was founded on May 1, 1892 in an old villa , but was then known as a non-Latin high school for boys . The school was attended by about 50 students at that time, who were taught by six teachers. After the population of Eimsbüttel increased for various reasons, more and more new students came to the school, which is why the school, which was now called "Realschule in Eimsbüttel" , had to move into a larger building in October 1895. A building on Weidenstieg was selected, which would later house the state commercial school and business school Weidenstieg .

A year later, in 1896, the Kaifu already had 491 students and 17 teachers, so that a larger new building was necessary. In 1905 the city council approved the plan for the construction of a new school building in Telemannstrasse, which was rejected a short time later due to extremely high costs. Since the Eimsbütteler Turnverband (ETV) was also looking for a site, Kaifu and ETV teamed up and created construction plans for possible buildings from 1907 to 1909. After looking for a space, they chose the vacant space between Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer, Bundesstraße, Hohen Weide and Heymannstraße for their buildings and divided it up among themselves. Construction began according to Albert Erbe's designs and was completed in 1912. The construction cost an estimated 791,100 marks , which would be the equivalent of around nine million euros today . Due to the division between ETV and Kaifu, the halls of the Eimsbüttler Turnverein may be used free of charge by the Kaifu.

During the First , and later also in the Second World War , the school building was converted into a military hospital. The rooms could not be used again until 1919. At the time of National Socialism in Hamburg in 1939 all teachers of the Kaifu who were not members of the NSDAP were asked to leave school.

From 1952 to 1964 pupils of the Wilhelm-Gymnasium were taught in the building of the Kaifu , since the State and University Library Hamburg was set up in the former building of the Wilhelm-Gymnasium . From April 1, 1968, the Kaifu began to teach boys and girls together .

Two years later, in 1970, there were no Saturday classes. Another two years later, a course system was introduced at the school, the so-called Eimsbüttler model. The upper levels of several high schools in Eimsbüttels were taught together. Originally the upper levels of the Bismarck-Gymnasium and the Helene-Lange-Gymnasium were combined in addition to the Kaifu. The model still exists today in a slightly different form.

In 1988 it was decided to completely renovate the school building, which was completed in 1992 for the 100th anniversary of the school. Another building was built in 1999, the topping-out ceremony of which took place in December 1999 and which was opened for the students in the summer of 2000. This is where the fifth grade classrooms are now.

In autumn 2012 the high school celebrated the 100th anniversary of the building. Several former students were invited.

School camp in Wenningstedt

The Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer grammar school is an Apple model school and has a wide-ranging exchange program ( Prague , Nancy , Budapest , Salt Lake City (until 2006), Palencia and New York City ) and many sports activities (from rowing and swimming to basketball and Dancing ). After the closure of the Bismarck grammar school and the takeover of all its facilities, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer grammar school together with the Helene-Lange grammar school ran a school camp in Wenningstedt on Sylt .

The old building has been used several times as a backdrop for films and commercials, for example in 1967 for the film Zur Hölle mit den Paukern with Hansi Kraus and Theo Lingen and more recently for the German television film Homevideo and the feature film Sommer . In addition, several episodes of the pseudo-docu-soap Die Schulermittler were filmed in the building.

From August 2011 to August 2012 the high school's new cafeteria was built. The construction costs amounted to approx. 1.2 million € and were borne by the authority for schools and vocational training .
