The Süderelbe high school (usually called GySue ) is a state high school in the Hamburg district of Neugraben-Fischbek , which is south of the Elbe.

History and buildings

The Süderelbe grammar school was founded in 1990 as a merger of the Neuwiedenthal grammar school, the Fischbek grammar school and the Süderelbe / Neugraben grammar school. The Neuwiedenthal grammar school building was transferred to another school, the Fischbek grammar school building, with the exception of the sports hall, was rented to a Catholic school by the authorities. Today's Süderelbe high school is located in the building of the former upper school center.

The school location on Falkenbergsweg is a little south of Cuxhavener Straße ( B73 ), on a plot of land on a pronounced hillside. The school building was erected in 1971. The building complex is comb-like, with the "ridge ridge" running on the southern edge of the property and the "prongs" being aligned with the terrain sloping to the north. In 2006 the building complex was expanded with a two-storey, elevated structure. In 2012 a free-standing two-field sports hall was built.

In 2002 the headmaster Helmut Bossel handed over his office to his successor Thomas Fritsche after 25 years. Since the 2002/2003 school year, as at all Hamburg high schools, the Abitur was introduced after twelve years .

School profile

The Süderelbe grammar school is an open all-day school . The majority of the students at the grammar school come from the Hamburg districts of Neugraben-Fischbek and Hausbruch . In the survey of the social index for Hamburg schools in 2011, a social index of 5 was calculated for the GySue on a scale from 1 (disadvantageous requirements of the student body, highest need for support) to 6 (best conditions, no need for support). In the school year 2016/17, almost 49% of the GySue students had a migration background , slightly above the average of all Hamburg high schools.

At GySue, six profiles are currently offered in the upper level , including a. (The profile-giving subjects are named in each case):

  • Planet earth - environment, climate, people, profiling subject: geography
  • Nature and health, profiling subject: biology
  • Energy and environmental technology: profiling subject: physics
  • Culture and language: profiling subject: history
  • Culture and language - AbiBac, profiling subject: History in French
  • Sport and health, profiling subjects: sport, biology

Special features and partnerships

In August 2002 the school's offering was expanded to include a bilingual French branch . Since then, the bilingual training can be continued up to the Abitur and finished with a language certificate, which entitles you to study at French universities.

The high school runs student exchange programs with schools in France , Australia , the United States and England .

Together with the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg , talented courses are organized in chemistry , computer science (especially robotics ) and mathematics . Theatrical performances take place every year . With the big band "JazzBond" and the "School Orchestra", the Süderelbe high school has two larger instrumental ensembles that also perform outside of school; In addition and in preparation for these ensembles, string and wind courses are offered for younger students (age group 5 and 6). In addition, smaller musical formations are formed again and again, especially for special occasions; In retrospect , e.g. Splash (which broke up with the dismissed high school year 2005), Ginga and Lydit deserve mention . The choirs in lower, middle and upper grades are also important in school life today.

The first school newspaper was Funzel in 1975 , followed by OZ Magazin, which appeared a year later . Both were available at the same time for a long time and reflected the main political currents represented at the school at the time, Jusos (Funzel) and Schüler Union (OZ Magazin). Since 2004 there is a school newspaper under the title New Graven Times (initially under the title: LogIn) . Since 2008 the school newspaper published by the school management has been called GySue-Aktuell , with special editions (GySue-Aktuell extra) appearing at regular intervals . As an alternative, another school newspaper called Gysue-Aktueller was published in the 2011/2012 school year .
