The Albrecht-Thaer-Gymnasium is a high school in the Hamburg district of Stellingen with around 700 students.

School history

On October 13, 1873, the so-called Higher Citizens School opened in rented rooms near Holstenplatz . In the first year it was attended by only about 90 students. Carl Christian Redlich was appointed as the first headmaster . In the following years the number of students grew to over 300. On October 14, 1878, the school moved into its own building on a square between Karolinenstrasse, Glacischaussee and the path near the church yards. Albrecht Wilhelm Thaer was appointed as Redlich's successor in 1896 . Reforms of the curriculum were undertaken under Thaer, for example in mathematics, science subjects and in the area of languages. As an upper secondary school in front of the Holstentor , this was the first science and modern language school in Hamburg without Latin and Greek.

When the First World War broke out , Thaer was called up for military service. Ludwig Doermer, who later became the state school administrator, took over his position as headmaster. After the war, Thaer returned to his old position as headmaster for a short time. In 1919 the workers 'and soldiers' council in Hamburg temporarily took over government and abolished the directorate in all schools in Hamburg. The "Self-Administration Act" passed in 1920 provided for the schools to be managed jointly by the parents' council and the teaching staff. In 1923 the school was renamed the Albrecht Thaer School in honor of Albrecht Thaer, who died in 1921 .

The school association was reorganized in 1933 according to the so-called leader principle . Bruno Peyn , appointed by the state education authority, took over the school management. Shortly before the Enabling Act , a majority of the school's college still supported the Weimar school constitution. Until 1937 the school was called Thaer-Oberrealschule in front of the Holstentor , then Albrecht-Thaer-Oberschule for boys (OfJ).

With around 330 students, supervised by 14 teachers, classes were resumed on October 2, 1945. The building at the Holsten Gate was damaged in the war. At the beginning of the school year 1951/52 it was decided that in the future at the Albrecht-Thaer School pupils of elementary, middle and high school would be taught under one roof. The reason for this was that after the war many families moved to the outskirts and the school had to struggle with declining student numbers. This attempt at an additive comprehensive school was abandoned after ten years. From 1957 the school was called Albrecht-Thaer-Gymnasium.

At the beginning of the school year 1968/69 it was decided to move the school to a building complex on Wegenkamp. In 1982 the school had the highest number of pupils in its history, with around 920 pupils, because it took over the majority of the pupils at the Stellingen grammar school, which had been converted into a comprehensive school. In 1986 the school had only 50 registrations for the fifth grade, the decline was due to the opening of other high schools in the area. In order to better anchor the grammar school in the Stellingen district and to increase awareness there, teachers of the grammar school launched the lecture series Schule Aktuell .

For many years, the high school than air school , environmental school , moving school and school with exemplary training excellent. The grammar school was the only school in Hamburg and one of five schools in Germany to receive the gold consumer school award .

The Research Institute for Dye Solar Cells (FfF) and the Facility for Chlorophyll Extraction (FFCE) have also been based for two years to research sustainable energy generation options at the Albrecht-Thaer-Gymnasium.
