Johann Valett (born July 8, 1888 in Hamburg , † June 27, 1937 in Glückstadt ) was a German painter, draftsman and graphic artist.

Life

After graduating from the Holstentor secondary school in Hamburg , Valett was an apprentice drawing at Georg Hulbe's arts and crafts workshop from Easter 1904 to autumn 1906 . From January 1907 to summer 1907 he studied at the trade school in Munich.

From October 30, 1907 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Karl Raupp . From 1908 to 1910 he continued his studies at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar with Fritz Mackensen and Hans Olde .

From 1910 to 1911 he served as a one-year volunteer with the Fusilier Regiment "Queen" (Schleswig-Holsteinisches) No. 86 in Flensburg . After his military service he lived in Weimar for a short time in 1912 and was then a master class student with Hans Olde at the Kassel Art Academy until 1913 , after which he was back in Weimar as a freelance artist.

After the outbreak of the First World War he was called up for military service. On October 2, 1914, he was the first person from Hamburg to receive the Iron Cross 2nd class.

In April 1916 he married Gertrude von Heyne in Weimar.

After the First World War he changed his place of residence several times: from 1918 to 1920 he lived in Weimar, from 1920 to 1922 in Berlin , in 1922 for a few months in Heringsdorf , then until 1924 in Rastow , 1924 to 1925 again in Weimar, from 1925 to 1926 in Frankenhain in Thuringia , from 1926 to 1928 in Kiel , from 1928 in Altona , from 1934 again in Berlin.

He showed his works in 1913 at the “Art exhibition for the millennium of the royal seat of Cassel”, in 1919 at the exhibition “Paintings and Sculptures from Weimar Artists Group II”, in 1925 at the “4th Thuringian Art Exhibition ”(Weimar), 1929 at the exhibition of the Altonaer Künstlerverein , 1931 at the exhibition in the Hamburger Kunsthalle .

Valett was a member of the Hamburg Art Association .

His works can be found in the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum Schloss Gottorf and in the Hamburg Laeiszhalle (portrait of the pianist Julius Spengel). The Detlefsen Museum in Glückstadt dedicated an exhibition to him in 2019.
