Raupp initially trained as a landscape painter under August Lucas and from 1856 to 1858 under Jakob Becker at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt for the genre . As a student at the Munich Academy , he joined Karl Piloty from 1860 to 1865 . He then founded his own studio and a small private painting school.

In 1868 he was appointed professor of painting at the Nuremberg School of Applied Arts and worked in this position until 1879: When he returned to Munich in 1880, he took over a professorship at the academy there, was initially a teacher of the class of antiquities, became head of the “pre-school” and took over then the management of the "nature class". Some of his numerous students later became known as painters and draftsmen or otherwise. Among others Karl Arnold , Fritz and Erich Kuithan , Hans Brand, Adalbert Hock , Kristoffer Holst , Heinrich Kiel , Walter Queck , Andrea Robbi , Karl Gross-Sattelmair, Wilhelm Stumpf , Alois Kolb , Paul Thiem , Milan Milovanović , Joseph Henfling and Joseph Ehrismann .

Raupp liked to paint atmospheric pictures in which landscape and staffage are in balance, and preferably motifs from the life of fishermen and country folk on the Chiemsee , whom he got to know in 1869. Because of this topic he was also called the "Chiemsee-Raupp", founded a painters' colony on the Fraueninsel, where he spent the summer months since 1869. Max Haushofer had already discovered the island's beauty in 1828 and founded the Frauenchiemsee artists' colony there. Raupp made the Chiemsee a popular excursion destination. The summer guests included numerous painters, which was not received positively everywhere. On the island he wrote his handbook of painting (4th edition 1904) and was with Franz Wolter editor of the 1918 artist chronicle of Frauenchiemsee .

He had a fine sense of color; his presentation was broad and powerful.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death in June 2018, the Heimatmuseum in Prien honored the painter and his works with an exhibition.
