Paul Adolph Martin Thiem (born November 2, 1858 in Berlin , Prussia , † August 20, 1922 in Starnberg ) was a German painter , graphic artist , writer and book illustrator .

Life

Paul Thiem, also Paul Adolf Martin Thiem , was born in Berlin as the son of the stockbroker and art collector Adolph Thiem . His mother was the daughter of the organist Samuel Lebrecht Thieme from Bärnsdorf, Saxony. He spent his childhood in Niederschöneweide in the Villa Thiem at Sedanstrasse 10. Thiem attended high school in Potsdam , From January 1882 to Easter 1882 he studied art for a few months at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and from 1877 art history in Munich, where he wrote a doctoral thesis on Tiepolo . Then he was accepted into the Munich Art Academy in 1883, where he was a student of Gysis , Raupp and Löfftz .

Thiem had two sisters and a brother Walther. In addition to his painterly work, Thiem illustrated children's books, wrote dramas and the humorous novel The Prince and His Uncle . The Starnberg Thiem Villa at Josef-Fischhaber-Straße 27 is now used as a municipal facility to enable artists to use the studio for two years.

Thiem's ​​work can be roughly divided into two phases, the romantic, fantastic, humorous and grotesque painting and drawing period in the style of the Munich school.

He liked to paint lively places, including the hustle and bustle in Munich and Venice.
