life and work

Little is known about Jan van Ravesteyn's origins and training. It is believed that he was a student of Michiel van Mierevelt from Delft, after which he is said to have been in Italy. From 1598 he was accepted as a master in the Guild of St. Luke in The Hague, where he also held the position of head ( doyen ) for some time . However, he was striving to create a guild only for painters. With that he wanted to get away from the blobs , d. H. drop off the craftsmen. In 1656 he was instrumental in founding the Confrérie Pictura .

He painted both individual portraits and group portraits ( rifle pieces , magistrates ), which are distinguished by their clear but somewhat reddish coloring and energetic characteristics. His main works are: a Schützenstück from 1616, you can see the riflemen entering, in part this has already happened, and that in a lively representation. In addition two pictures of the magistrate in the Hague and the portrait of his family in Braunschweig. In The Hague alone there are 24 portraits of colonels from the period 1611 to 1624.
