The Niels-Stensen-Gymnasium (NSG) is a Catholic high school in the Hamburg district of Harburg . The high school uses the listed building of the former Harburg fire station , plus a new building. It is named after the scientist and Catholic Bishop Niels Stensen .

History and architecture

The grammar school was founded in 2003 as a branch of the Sophie Barat School , and the school started with two fifth grades. In 2006 it was officially recognized as a grammar school, and from this year the school became a three-class. In 2009, lessons in the upper level began in the former fire station building at Hastedtstrasse 30. In 2011, parts of the grammar school moved into a new building on Haeckelstrasse. The design for the new building was the result of a competition organized by the Catholic School Association and was implemented in the vicinity of the former fire station.

In 2017, the ownership of all Catholic schools in Hamburg was transferred from the Hamburg Catholic School Association to the Archdiocese of Hamburg . In 2018 it became known that the grammar school, along with four of the 21 Catholic schools in Hamburg, was to be closed. The closure of the grammar school for economic reasons should take place within five years. In July 2019, Archbishop Stefan Heße informed the initiators of the Hamburg Cooperative Initiative that the Catholic schools in Hamburg affected by the closure - including the Niels-Stensen-Gymnasium - should not be operated by the initiative. The Harburg Catholic School (a primary school) is to move into the Niels-Stensen-Gymnasium building that has become vacant.

School profile

The main catchment area of the grammar school is the Hamburg districts south of the Elbe, in particular Eißendorf , Heimfeld , Harburg and Rönneburg . In 2011, a social index of 4 was calculated for the grammar school . In the 2016/17 school year, 56% of the students at the Niels-Stensen-Gymnasium had a migration background .
