Social index for Hamburg schools

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The social index for Hamburg schools ( Hamburg social index for short , originally LAU index , then called KESS index ) has been calculated since 1996 for all state primary schools, district schools and grammar schools in Hamburg . The aim of the statistical survey is to determine the starting conditions specified by the parents and the environment for the pupils, insofar as these are relevant for success in school. The survey is not limited to the data that are usually collected in connection, such as the parents 'income and formal educational qualifications, but - according to Pierre Bourdieu - also includes the assets and cultural and social capital of the parents' home. In order to calculate the social index, the pupils and their parents are asked randomly in writing . Regional structural data are also included in the calculation, for example the unemployment rate in the school's catchment area. The social index currently has a scale from 1 ( disadvantageous conditions, high need for support ) to 6 ( favorable conditions, no special need for support ). With the help of the social index, the differences between schools with similarly advantageous (or disadvantageous) conditions are to be made more visible in order to enable fair comparisons. In addition, the school authority takes the social index into account when equipping schools. If the student body's requirements are unfavorable, schools should receive more jobs in order to enable smaller classes or increased language support measures .
