The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium (IKG) is a state high school in the Hamburg district of Marmstorf , in the south of the Harburg district . The grammar school, founded in 1970, is a European school with bilingual courses in English.

history

The Sinstorf grammar school was founded in 1970. In 1975 the new building was occupied. In 1982 high school graduates hosted the “Ackerfete” in the Appelbütteler Valley for the first time, which has since developed into the “largest non-commercial high school graduation party in Northern Germany”. The name was changed to Immanuel Kant in the first half of the 1990s.

The entire site of the high school was completely renovated from 2008 to 2010, at the same time a multi-purpose hall was built. The total costs for this construction measure were almost EUR 7 million. In the course of this renovation, the outdoor facilities were also redesigned, including a mini soccer field.

In the course of the refugee crisis in Germany in 2015/2016 , a large number of schoolchildren without sufficient knowledge of German came to Hamburg. In November 2015, "International preparatory classes" were set up for grades 9/10 at the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium.

Location and architecture

The approximately 25,000 m² school grounds are located in the south of the Marmstorf district , near the border with the Sinstorf district . The grammar school is accessed from the street Am Pavillon , which branches off from Sinstorfer Weg. The immediate southern neighbor of the grammar school is another school with the address Sinstorfer Weg 40, which was inaugurated in 1965 as the Sinstorf School . The neighboring school grounds were used as the location of the Lessing district school until 2020, and since then by the Sinstorfer Weg primary school .

The original development of the grammar school was built in 1975 according to plans by the Hamburg Building Department, including the main building, the specialist room building and a three-field hall . The main building is a series school building of the "Type 68", also called "Double H" according to the floor plan. This series production was built around 40 times from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s in what was then the outskirts and expansion areas of Hamburg. The three-story buildings consist of industrially prefabricated sandwich elements that were put together on site. The facades were usually clad with exposed aggregate concrete. At the Sinstorf grammar school, exposed concrete was used instead .

The multifunctional hall, completed in 2010, accommodates a multi-purpose hall for breaks and the cafeteria for all-day care. As a result of the energetic renovation of all existing buildings, the facades could also be redesigned, which are now designed in the colors white and anthracite with contrasting facade panels in a wood look.

School profile

The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium had a good 600 students in the school year 2017/18. The catchment area is essentially the eastern part of the Harburg district , in particular Marmstorf, Sinstorf , Langenbek and Eißendorf . When the social index for Hamburg schools was surveyed in 2011, a social index of 5 was calculated for the Meiendorf high school on a scale from 1 (disadvantageous requirements of the student body, highest need for support) to 6 (best conditions, no need for support). In the 2016/17 school year, almost 35% of the IKG students had a migration background , slightly less than the average of all Hamburg high schools.

The bilingual offer of the grammar school consists of increased English lessons in grades 5 and 6. Bilingual specialist classes in English are available in geography (from grade 7) and optionally also in history (from grade 8, in compulsory elective lessons ). A bilingual upper level profile with the main subject geography has been offered since the 2010/11 school year.

As a European school, the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium offers exchange programs for different grades, including:

  • Colegi Sagrada Família Sant Andreu in Barcelona , ten-day stay for grade 9):
  • St. Kilian's German School, Dublin , three-week stay with internship, accommodation with host families
  • Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium Prague , two-week stay for grade 11, accommodation with host families

In addition to the linguistic focus, there is a scientific focus. In addition to classes in biology, physics, chemistry and computer science, there are scientifically-oriented electives in the intermediate level as well as various working groups. The grammar school works together with the TU Hamburg and was awarded a MINT- friendly school in 2016.
