Harburg fire station
The old Harburg fire station is a former fire station on Hastedtstrasse in the Harburg district of Hamburg . It was the first new building for the professional fire brigade founded in 1921 in the then independent city of Harburg.
The building with its clinker facade was built in 1924 according to plans by the Harburg municipal building authority. The fire station is surmounted by a tower with a clock tower, which was used for climbing exercises and for drying the hoses. The main building - with the vehicle hall, telegraph center, crew rooms and director's apartment - and an auxiliary building with technical and sanitary facilities were added to it.
On the edge of Hastedt'schen Park , which was built over a little later , the complex documents the reform demands in terms of the New Building of the 1920s even before the residential buildings in the area.
After war damage, the restoration was carried out in 1949 (outbuildings partly shortened / simplified). The station was used by the Hamburg fire brigade until the move to the new Harburger station on the Großmoorbogen in 1984 .
The building was finally converted by the municipal Sprinkenhof AG for the Helms Museum , which has presented the city history collection and special exhibitions there since 1990. In May 2009 this part of the museum was closed again.
Since the school year 2009/2010, the main building of the fire station has been used by the Niels-Stensen-Gymnasium for teaching purposes. The building on Haeckelstrasse was demolished to make room for a new high school.
