The Helmholtz-Gymnasium Karlsruhe is a grammar school in Karlsruhe's Weststadt . It is named after the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz and is primarily characterized by its music profile.

history

The grammar school was founded in 1896 as an upper secondary school . The building was built between 1893 and 1895 as the Friedrichschule according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Strieder . Further work was carried out in 1913 under Friedrich Beichel . It is a listed building.

Paul Wehrle initiated the first music train at a high school in Baden-Württemberg at the Helmholtz-Gymnasium Karlsruhe and thus shaped the profile of the school.

profile

The Helmholtz-Gymnasium Karlsruhe offers a scientific , a linguistic and, as the only school in Karlsruhe, a music profile. Pupils in the classes with a musical profile take music from the eighth grade as a major subject relevant to promotion, and participation in one of the school's many music ensembles is compulsory. The first foreign language (from grade five) is English , the second (from grade six) French or Latin , as a third foreign language (from grade eight) Spanish is added in addition to Latin or French.

Student exchange

The Helmholtz has maintained a regular exchange with a Hungarian high school in Kaposvár for years . There is also a regular exchange with schools in France ( Lycée Georges de la Tour in Nancy ) and the USA ( Conestoga Valley High School in Lancaster, PA ).

Special features / awards

The Helmholtz-Gymnasium was involved in the Pimokl pilot project right from the start, in which the usual graphical pocket calculator (GTR) is dispensed with in separate courses from the 11th grade in mathematics and a computer algebra system , in this case Maple , is used instead .

As a further “experiment”, since the 2005/2006 school year, mostly only double lessons have been given. The reactions were mostly positive, so this practice will be continued.

As a music high school, the school has numerous music ensembles, including the lower school choir, the philharmonic choir and the chamber choir, orchestras I to III and two jazz big bands. The ensembles are known nationwide and have already undertaken numerous concert tours, including to Israel , Jordan , Chile , Argentina and Namibia .

In Karlsruhe on October 17, 2005, on the occasion of the reception of the state government at the education congress "Education for Europe", twenty schools were awarded for the Baden-Württemberg educational workshop, including the Helmholtz grammar school for the development of educational concepts in the fields of mathematics and natural sciences .

The school also has classes that use tablet computers , keep notebooks on them and use online school books.
