Nora Krug (* 1977 in Karlsruhe ) is a German-American illustrator and author . She lives in New York .

Life

Nora Krug grew up in her native Karlsruhe. As a 16-year-old she was on a student exchange in Canada. After attending grammar school, she studied performance design at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts ( Bachelor with Honors ) and then documentary film and illustration at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she graduated as a designer. In 2002 she went to New York to study Illustration as a Visual Essay ( MFA ) at the School of Visual Arts in New York .

In her multiple award-winning graphic memoir Heimat , Nora Krug records the search for her own family history in the context of the Nazi era. Her maternal grandfather, Willi Rock, a driving instructor in Karlsruhe, plays a role in it, who, according to her research, was one of the followers of the Nazi regime and became a member of the NSDAP in 1933. He died in 1988 when Krug was eleven years old. Her knowledge of the family's past is based on his stories as she performs in Heimat . Her paternal uncle, Franz-Karl Krug, died in northern Italy at the age of 18 during the war in 1944.

The reason for the question of a family complicity in the events of the Nazi era was, among other things, the fact that Krug is married to an American illustrator of Jewish origin and through encounters with her husband's Jewish family she dealt intensively with the question of German collective guilt. Her husband's family had emigrated to the USA from Strasbourg and Frankfurt am Main before the start of the Holocaust. Nora Krug is a German and American citizen. The couple have a daughter (born 2015) and live in Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn.
