Matheus de Layens (* in Neufvilles, today Soignies ; † December 3, 1483 in Leuven ) was a Brabant architect . He became famous for his work on the construction of the Löwen town hall , one of the most famous examples of Brabant Gothic .

From 1433 Matheus de Layens worked in Leuven, first under Sulpitius van Vorst and then under Jan Keldermans , whose successor in the office of city architect he was in 1445. In this area of ​​responsibility he worked on the fortifications of the city of Löwen, but was mainly given responsibility for the construction work on the town hall and on the transept of St. Peter's Church .

Around 1450 he worked at the St. Leonardus Church in Zoutleeuw , the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Poel Church in Tienen and the St. Sulpitius Church in Diest . From 1457 to 1488 Matheus de Layens had the transept of the St. Jacob Church in Löwen built. From 1457 he also took over the management of the work on the Waltrudis Church in Mons , where he was inspired by the St. Peter's Church in Löwen. In 1479 he was entrusted with the restoration of the town hall of Mons.

His last work was the meeting house of the guilds (" Tafelrond ") in Leuven.

He died in Leuven in 1483 in his house "De Koithoek" and was buried in the Sint Jacobskirche. However, his grave there is no longer preserved today.
