Klaus Tschira

Klaus Tschira (born December 7, 1940 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † March 31, 2015 in Heidelberg ) was a German entrepreneur . Together with Hans-Werner Hector , Dietmar Hopp , Hasso Plattner and Claus Wellenreuther , he was one of the founders of the software company SAP SE in Walldorf . From 1998 to 2007 he was a member of the supervisory board of SAP AG.

Life

After graduating from the Helmholtz-Gymnasium Karlsruhe and studying physics at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) (part of what is now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) ), Tschira worked from 1966 to 1972 as a system consultant at IBM in Mannheim .

In 1972 Tschira was one of the five founders of the system analysis and program development  GbR in Weinheim , from which SAP AG emerged in 1988, and in 1998 he switched to the supervisory board.

Tschira has been a patron and sponsor since retiring from day-to-day business at SAP . Tschira was married and had two sons.

Klaus Tschira died on March 31, 2015.

Klaus Tschira Foundation

In 1995 he set up the Klaus Tschira Foundation to promote the natural sciences , computer science and mathematics and to arouse public interest in these subjects. The seat of the foundation is the Villa Bosch in Heidelberg , the former residence of the Nobel laureate in chemistry, Carl Bosch .

In 1997 the European Media Laboratory , an institute for applied informatics, was founded.

In 2010 he founded the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). In 2011, the House of Astronomy built by the Foundation was presented to the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg as a gift.

The Klaus Tschira Foundation has been organizing advanced training courses for natural scientists since 2001. They are intended to promote collaboration between scientists and journalists and thus the public. The Klaus Tschira Prize for Understandable Science is also related to this .

Student and teacher projects are also funded. The youth software prize was awarded until 2011 . The project ended with the tenth award. The Klaus Tschira Foundation has been promoting the presentation skills of teachers and students, especially in mathematical and natural science subjects, with the Youth Presenting project since 2010.

Gerda and Klaus Tschira Foundation (GKTS)

In 2008 he founded the Gerda and Klaus Tschira Foundation (GKTS) together with his wife Gerda Tschira.

With this foundation, on December 17, 2008, he acquired the former country residence of the Nobel laureate in chemistry Wilhelm Ostwald in Großbothen near Grimma from the Free State of Saxony .

The foundation has set itself the goal of continuing the Energie Landsitz in the spirit of Wilhelm Ostwald. The Wilhelm Ostwald Museum will continue to provide information on the work of the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry in the future. In addition, the site will continue to serve as a training and meeting place.
