Alwin Walther Medal

The Alwin Walther Medal was awarded between 1997 and 2010 by the Technical University of Darmstadt for outstanding achievements as well as for extraordinary research and development work in the fields of computer science or applied mathematics .

Since 2016, the Robert Piloty Prize , which is endowed with 10,000 euros and includes award winners from the fields of electrical engineering and information technology, has been awarded in succession to the Alwin Walther Medal .

Alwin Walther

Alwin Oswald Walther (1898–1967) was a German mathematician , engineer and university professor . He is one of the pioneers of computer technology in Germany . At his Institute for Practical Mathematics (IPM) at the Technical University in Darmstadt , the first commercial computer was installed as early as 1957, on which all students of the university could learn to program. His work aimed at the use of mathematics in the natural , engineering and economic sciences . He was instrumental in setting up the German Computer Center (DRZ) in Darmstadt.
