Willi Jäger
Willi Jäger (born August 15, 1940 in Kschellowitz , district of Tepl ) is a German mathematician .
Life
After graduating from high school in Hof an der Saale in 1959, he began studying mathematics and physics at the University of Munich in the same year. He has been sponsored by the Cusanuswerk since the beginning of his studies and received his doctorate in 1966 with a thesis on the Dirichlet problem in outlying areas for the oscillation equation. From 1964 to 1969 he worked as an assistant at the mathematics institutes at the University of Munich and the University of Göttingen . In 1969 he completed his habilitation with a thesis entitled An Ordinary Second Order Differential Operator for Functions with Values in a Hilbert Space . From 1969 to 1970 he was a visiting scholar at the Courant Institute in New York. In 1970 he became professor of mathematics at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and from 1974 he became professor of applied mathematics at the University of Heidelberg . In 1987 he became the founding director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) in Heidelberg, and was its managing director until 1998. In 2004 he founded the first German center for modeling and simulation in the biosciences (BIOMS) together with Bert Sakmann .
In addition to problems of scientific computing, including the effective use of computers for mathematical modeling of complicated, mostly scientific problems, Jäger deals with problems of nonlinear differential equations, the calculus of variations, branch theory, and the spectral theory of differential operators mostly with a view to specific applications such as e.g. B. the visualization of data.
Willi Jäger is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . He is chairman of the board of the Society for Mathematical Research eV of the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach .
He is also the editor of mathematics publications at Springer-Verlag and R. Oldenbourg Verlag (Wissenschaftsverlag) as well as for the journal for pure and applied mathematics , or Crelles Journal Verlag de Gruyter for short.
Awards
He was awarded two honorary doctorates , from the University of Saint Petersburg and the Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj (Romania), from which he was also made an honorary senator . He also received awards such as the Alwin Walther Medal from the TU Darmstadt in 2000 and the Baden-Württemberg State Research Prize (1994).
In August 2007 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . In 2007 he gave the Gauss lecture at the DMV .
