The German School Rio de Janeiro celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. With its two branches of school, the German and the Brazilian, it has a unique educational offer in Rio de Janeiro. She leads her students to the Brazilian school leaving certificate and / or the Abitur. Learning the German language and multilingualism as key skills for a better understanding of the world are firmly anchored in the school's mission statement.

The school is located in the Botafogo district , in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro, not far from the tourist attractions Copacabana and Sugar Loaf . Immediately behind her is the Corcovado hill , on which the Christ statue stands. The school building and the large, park-like school grounds, which cover around 54,000 m², once served as the US embassy residence. In addition to the main building, there are several school buildings on the school premises with multimedia classrooms, art and music rooms, laboratories for physics, chemistry and IT, two libraries and two auditoriums, a multi-purpose sports hall, a sports field, a canteen as well as an infirmary and a car park .

The first official lesson took place on March 8, 1965. The school was founded on the private initiative of German parents who lived in Rio de Janeiro and is still a private school today. It is sponsored by the German side through the Federal Administration Office as a meeting school in terms of personnel and finances . Today it has almost 1,300 students, around 200 in kindergarten and 1,100 in twelve years of primary and secondary school. Most of them are Brazilians.

In the Brazilian branch, the students have German as a foreign language (DaF) and some subjects such as social studies and science are taught in German. During the first years of school, if there is interest and the requirements are met, Brazilian students are prepared to switch to the German branch. Around 50 percent of students finish school with both a Brazilian and a German school leaving certificate. The school has been running German exams since 1976. The school offers the German language diplomas DSD I and II. The students in the Brazilian branch also have the opportunity to study in Germany. The teaching staff consists of around 120 teachers, 30 of whom are from Germany. The kindergarten currently has around 25 employees. Working groups are also offered in addition to regular lessons. For example language and sports groups, robotics and theater courses, the traditional choir group, violin and piano lessons. In the upper level the school offers preparatory courses for internationally recognized English exams. During their school career, the students take part in several exchange programs in Germany and also complete both social and professional internships.
