The Matthias Claudius Schools are a comprehensive school and a privately run elementary school in the Bärendorf district of Bochum in former urban school buildings. The namesake is the writer Matthias Claudius (1740–1815). The sponsoring association is the Matthias Claudius Schools eV

General

The partner school has been the Majengo Institute in Goma , Democratic Republic of the Congo , near the border to Rwanda , since 1993, which gives one the opportunity to deal with the problems of the Third World in a concrete and helpful manner. After the destruction of the place by the Nyiragongo volcano in January 2002, students, parents and teachers collected € 40,000 for the reconstruction.

The schools have been taking part in the Independent School in North Rhine-Westphalia project since 2003 . The two schools are supported by the Friends' Association Matthias Claudius Schools Bochum eV , which publishes the magazine Die Schultüte .

Every Friday there is a high school in the school's triple sports hall. Alumni and teachers soccer take place.

primary school

The primary school, which was founded in 1986, is attended by 185 pupils, 45 of them with special needs.

comprehensive school

The comprehensive school opened in 1990 ( secondary level I and secondary level II ) has 820 students, 160 of whom have different educational needs. The school experiment joint teaching in North Rhine-Westphalia provides a framework for this . The first class graduated in 1999 , the High School . The learning office concept has been introduced since 2011. This concept is intended to help students work more independently.

Upper school and high school graduation

In the upper school there is a cooperation with the Theodor-Körner-Schule in some subjects . However, this is only necessary in a few subjects, as the profile concept in the upper level means that there are only a few courses with too few students. The concept of profiles in the upper school is necessary because there are relatively few students who do the Abitur. In addition, the profiles create a kind of class community.

profile Profile title intensified course Basic course
1 Find identity German art
2 Develop the future mathematics physics
3 Think globally English Social sciences
4th Shaping life biology Sports

These subjects are always taught in a profile network. The following subjects are available as additional advanced courses: geography, history, mathematics and German, which are also always taught within the profile.

Awards

The Matthias Claudius Comprehensive School was selected by the Robert Bosch Foundation as one of the 20 best schools in Germany for 2018.
