The Stephen Hawking School ( SHS ) in Neckargemünd is a state-approved private school for physically handicapped and non-handicapped children and young people and a special needs education and advice center . It is named after the British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking . The school belongs to the SRH Schools GmbH .

At the school, more than 650 pupils are taught integratively in ten courses as day or boarding school students. There are courses from elementary school to grammar school with a general, vocational, commercial and socio-educational focus. The school was founded in the 1970s. The school is a UNESCO project school .

From 481 applicants, the Stephen Hawking School was one of 18 schools in Germany that were nominated for the 2006 German School Prize .

Medical and therapeutic offer

A group of special educators trained in the special area of speech-impaired pedagogy offers therapies in the areas of speech, language and communication disabilities in individual or small group treatments. We also work on sentence structure , vocabulary and articulation .

The SRH Stephen Hawking School has its own occupational therapy and physiotherapy department.

Educational offer

For the pupils up to grade 6 there are supervised groups in which the pupils stay during the breaks and in the free periods. From grade 7 onwards, students continue to spend their free time in the group or at the service point. The school also has several boarding schools.

The school offers its students a wide range of opportunities to spend their free time. This includes the media library with over 25,000 media, a discotheque and an open wood, media and ceramic workshop.

Furthermore, it offers sports programs for physically disabled and non-disabled students, as well as for trainees and employees, including a. Climbing, soccer, volleyball, judo, basketball, badminton, table tennis, karate and archery.

The school's wheelchair basketball team took first place in the national finals of the youth training for Paralympics competition.

All courses are geared towards an inclusive profile ; this is implemented for most courses at the Neckargemünd location, in that the types of school are also attended by non-disabled private students . In the primary school, the special school and in the pre-vocational schools, the pupils or their parents can choose whether they prefer inclusive lessons in outside classes close to home in cooperation with other, mostly state-run schools, or whether they seek the exclusive educational situation at the school center.

The school relies on the increased use of computers (own IT curriculum ), which is particularly beneficial for students with motor impairments. An advice center for computers and communication aids is available to everyone free of charge. Pupils who cannot go to school at all due to their physical disabilities have the option of taking part in lessons online via video conference or other e-learning methods.
