History and architecture

The school was founded in 1906 as a girls 'and boys' school. Planning for the construction began in 1902 and the foundation stone was laid in 1905. In 1906 the Rellinger Strasse elementary school was inaugurated . The double school took up a boys 'and a girls' school, the latter comprised the first cooking school in Hamburg.

After 1945, the rebuilding of the school, which was badly damaged in the war, largely lost its original appearance. The roof has been raised in a simplified manner. In 1958, a former factory was converted into a gym for the school, followed by two-story buildings in the schoolyard in 1961.

In 1969 it became a secondary school and in 1991 it became an exclusive elementary school. In 2004, the systematic expansion of mixed-year learning groups instead of year- old classes began . Since 2008 the school has been participating in the Hamburg school experiment “alles >> kannner”, in which competence-oriented forms of teaching and performance feedback are developed. Since 2011, the Rellinger Straße school has offered the opportunity to attend school for six years.

In 2012 the school was awarded a German School Prize. The laudation said: “Children cannot do otherwise: they are always learning. At the Rellinger Strasse school - affectionately known as 'Relli' - you plan this learning yourself and also give yourself an account of what you can do ”.

From 2017 to 2018, a new building with specialist rooms, a library, a cafeteria and a two-field sports hall was built according to plans by BKS Krauss Stanczus Schurbohm + Partner Architects on Kieler Straße. The old building stock of the factory converted into a gymnasium was demolished. The two-story new building is L-shaped, the facade is designed with red brickwork.

School concept

In 2010, the introduction of the six-year primary school in Hamburg was rejected by a referendum . The Rellinger Straße school was one of the four primary schools in Hamburg that are still offering this model as part of a school trial. The use of this option is voluntary, i. H. pupils can leave elementary school after four years. The Rellinger Strasse school cooperates with the Stellingen district school , the Albrecht-Thaer grammar school and the Hoheluft grammar school in the transition after the sixth grade .

At the school Rellinger Straße there is cross-year learning (JÜL), i. H. Students of different years learn in a study group. The children in the first to third and fourth to sixth grades are put together in one group.

The lessons are individualized, each child receives a personal planning folder or "logbook" and works at their own learning pace. It is important that the children are independent and help each other instead of asking the teacher for help directly. After an introduction by the teacher, each child takes on a certain learning offer in which they support classmates who have problems with them ("boss system"). Instead of grades, the Rellinger Straße School has formulated certificates of competence.

Writing is taught using the reading by writing method developed by Jürgen Reichen . English is taught at the start of primary school, and a second foreign language (French or Spanish) can be chosen from grade 6. One focus of the lessons is new media , all classrooms have smartboards , computers and internet access.

At the Rellinger Strasse school there is a children's conference committee through which pupils can participate in decisions. She sends representatives to the school conference .

In each study group there is a boy and a girl who act as trained mediators . In addition, the school offers social skills training.

The lessons take place in a bound full day , i. H. Participation in the all-day offers is compulsory for the students. The school works with the Hoppetosse eV association to ensure care.
