Jürgen Reichen

Jürgen Reichen (born August 27, 1939 in Basel ; † October 19, 2009 ) was a Swiss reform pedagogue teaching in Hamburg .

Life

Jürgen Reichen studied at the University of Basel and became a teacher.

According to the core principle: "Children learn the more, the less they are taught", he developed the concept of reading by writing , which is widespread in Germany and which is directed against the use of the classic primer (with the help of the sound table ), and conveyed this concept at the Hamburg Institute for Teacher Training. At the same time he worked as a teacher.

Reichen succumbed to a serious illness in 2009. Hans Brügelmann wrote a "critical-admiring" appreciation for the German Society for Reading and Writing (DGLS).

Criticism of the method in science and the media and its ban in Brandenburg, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg

Numerous scientists and educators such as Renate Valtin are now sharply criticizing the concept developed by Reichen. Studies show a partial deterioration in spelling, for example in elementary school students in the second and third grades, but no longer at the end of elementary school, compared to comparison groups who have learned correct spelling from the beginning (see the latest meta-analysis by Funke 2014). An exception to this, however, is the growing group of bilingual children with a migration background . For these, the study came to significantly worse results: “These findings that exist should be taken very seriously. These point in the direction that bilingual pupils have more difficulties with “reading by writing” than with primer lessons. ” The teaching method is seen as problematic especially for dyslexics , children from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and children with a foreign language migration background. The different perspectives - also in research - have become visible during hearings in the school committees of the state parliaments of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg (see the documentation of the primary school association). In the meantime, schools in Hamburg, where the method was originally developed, have been forbidden by the competent authority to teach spelling using the “reading by writing” method. In Baden-Württemberg, too, elementary schools were banned from the method at the end of December 2016; Schleswig-Holstein is also beginning to distance itself from it. In the federal state of Brandenburg, the method may no longer be used as of the 2019/20 school year on the instructions of Education Minister Britta Ernst . In the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, this learning method was abolished for the 2019/2020 school year.
