The Erika-Mann-Grundschule is a listed school building in the Utrecht Strasse 25–27 and Malplaquetstrasse 29–31 in the Berlin district of Wedding . The unusually cut plot of land was acquired by the city of Berlin for the construction of the 273rd and 291st community schools. The street corner was already built on with a tenement house. That is why city planning officer Ludwig Hoffmann had two separate buildings erected in 1914–1916, which continued the edge of the block and formed a schoolyard inside. In the school year 2017/18, 619 children were taught in the school.

The school is named after the actress, cabaret artist, writer and editor Erika Mann (1905–1969).

architecture

A symmetrical street facade with a protruding central section, which is accentuated by colossal Ionic pilasters , turns towards the Utrecht Street . The middle section contains two gyms on top of each other . The side areas used to house teachers' apartments, a public library and a municipal poor office. The class wing adjoins Malplaquetstraße, which is supplemented by an inward-facing side wing. The spatial arrangement of the four-storey class wing corresponds to the typology that was customary at the time: the classrooms go off to one side from the corridor . To get the children in the mood for school life, Ludwig Hoffmann had sandstone reliefs put up: above the entrances you can see bears, the heraldic animals of Berlin , and in the courtyard putti playing with books, a calculator and plants.

modification

From 2003 the listed building underwent a comprehensive renovation. In the first construction phase, the corridor areas were redesigned into multi-purpose lounge areas. The new seating and cloakroom elements made of a wide variety of non-combustible materials immerse each floor in a different atmosphere and at the same time create space for differentiated teaching in small groups. In the second renovation phase in 2006/2007, the building was expanded for all-day operation. Various corridors and classrooms have been redesigned into recreational landscapes that adapt to the children's learning rhythm and respond to their development, for example through non-standard seating modules that give children the chance to find their own posture.
