history

Today's high school at the Electoral Palace was opened as a municipal secondary school in 1831 and nationalized as the grand ducal provincial secondary school in 1836 . In 1854 Friedrich Karl Ludwig Schoedler (1813–1884) became director of the school, which now has around 300 students. From 1863, Israelite religious instruction was offered at the secondary school, which was given by the Mainz rabbi, then Joseph Aub .

The Realschule was upgraded to a Realgymnasium in 1884 and two years later moved into a new building in Steingasse in the old town of Mainz. From 1912 a new building was erected in the north-western part of the old town of Mainz, north of the Electoral Palace . During the Third Reich, the school was called "Hermann Göring High School for Boys". Since 1950 the school has been called the "Gymnasium am Kurfürstlichen Schloss".

The forecourt of the school was named in 2013 after the honorary student Leo Trepp , who gave a widely acclaimed speech in 1981 on the school's 150th birthday. Since then the address has been Leo Trepp-Platz 1.

Profile / focus

The school has a linguistic focus with a bilingual train in English. After the orientation level, a class is formed in which additional hours of specialist instruction are given in English.

The school also has a focus on the MINT subjects . The "MINT-friendly school" seal, which is to be renewed every 3 years, has been in use since 2013. This includes dividing classes in STEM lessons in order to create better conditions for experimental work. From 2016/2017 to 2019/2020, the school was awarded the " National Computer Science School in Gold" competition.

As of the 2020/21 school year, the Schlossgymnasium will be one of the first 21 IT profile schools in Rhineland-Palatinate where IT is compulsory for all students in some grades.

The grammar school has been recognized as a European school since 2015 .

All-day school has been offered in the form of an offer for pupils of the orientation level since 2006/2007.

The school is part of the School without Racism - School with Courage and Fairtrade School network .

The building of the high school at the electoral palace was built in 1914 by the Mainz city architect Adolf Gelius as a high school . Located opposite the splendid Renaissance building of the Electoral Palace , the grammar school was deliberately kept in simple forms. The south wing with the main facade on Dieter-von-Isenburg-Straße protrudes far into the line of Greiffenklaustraße and thus emphasizes the main entrance on the south-west corner. In front of the main entrance, an offset from the neighboring buildings creates a forecourt that creates sufficient distance from the castle opposite. This also forms the prelude to the main entrance of the school, with Tuscan columns in the with rustiziertem masonry designed basement is cut. The lintel above the entrance is decorated with reliefs of stylized plants and mythical creatures.

Above the basement there are three full floors, which are horizontally divided between the second and third floors by a cornice . On the main facade, above the four middle windows on the first floor, there are busts of four scientists who represent the educational ideal of the school: Theodor Mommsen for history , Hermann von Helmholtz , Justus Liebig and Friedrich Karl Ludwig Schoedler for natural sciences .

The north wing on Greiffenklaustraße, originally one storey lower, was extended in 1953. The entire school complex underwent extensive renovations and new buildings in 1984. Nevertheless, the school building has a strong influence on the appearance of the monument zone north of the Electoral Palace and is therefore a listed building .
