The Otto-Schott-Gymnasium (formerly Gymnasium Gonsenheim ; short: GyGo , formerly known as Gonsbach-Gymnasium ) is a high school founded in 1972 in the Mainz district of Gonsenheim . The school authority of the educational institution located in the Gonsbach valley is the city of Mainz. The high school was named after the German chemist and glass technician Otto Schott in December 2011 by resolution of the Mainz City Council .

The Otto-Schott-Gymnasium forms a network with the School for the Promotion of the Gifted and the International School (abbreviated: hbf / is), which was set up in the 2004/2005 school year.

Educational concept

The Otto-Schott-Gymnasium has been a G8 and all-day high school since the 2008/2009 school year . The lessons are organized in a double-hour model. The learned material is practiced and deepened in small groups. Individual support offers exist, particularly in the area of spelling and reading skills .

Focus

One focus is MINT (mathematics, computer science, natural science, technology). The Otto-Schott-Gymnasium was recognized as one of nineteen schools in Rhineland-Palatinate as a mathematical and scientific excellence center and can therefore call itself a MINT-EC school . The school also has the highly gifted branch (hbfis -Highly gifted support / international school) which is the only public highly gifted school in Rhineland-Palatinate with a separate curriculum. It should also be emphasized that an advanced course in computer science is offered. English or French are offered bilingual as the first foreign language (possibility to acquire the French Baccalauréat ). There are over 100 working groups from the fields of music, new media, natural sciences, sports and theater. The school maintains exchange contacts with educational institutions in France , United Kingdom , Italy , Israel and the United States .

history

The school was founded in 1972. The first director was Manfred Brixius, who came from the episcopal Willigis grammar school and was appointed headmaster on February 1, 1972. In 1975 the first year of Abitur could be passed. Notable milestones in school history are the establishment of the German-French bilingual train (1982) and the new school branch for the promotion of gifted students (2004), the renovation of the school building (2001-2006), the introduction of 8-year high school with all-day school (2008), as well the new cafeteria building (2010–2012). Frank Fritzinger has been the headmaster since September 2018.
