The Gutenberg-Gymnasium is a high school in the Upper Town of Mainz . The name of the school is linked to the name of the front of the Second World War, existing and later in high school at the Electoral Palace risen Oberrealschule "Gutenberg School", which can be considered a forerunner of today's Gutenberg Gymnasium thus and is a homage to Johannes Gutenberg .

history

On March 19, 1956, the school was founded by dividing the grammar school at the Electoral Palace into two independent schools. Initially, both grammar schools were located in the same building, where 552 students - exclusively boys - were taught by 25 teachers. In 1958 the construction of today's school building began on the Philippsschanze, which was inaugurated in 1960 and expanded in 1968. In 1972, 190 students switched to the newly opened Gonsenheim grammar school . Nevertheless, the number of students increased to 1212 in the same year, as girls were also accepted from that year. The resulting shortage of space could be alleviated by outsourcing some classes to a branch in the nearby Berlin settlement, which was closed again in 1986. In 1975 the reformed upper school ( MSS ) was introduced. In 1980, 111 teachers taught 75 classes in 1996. From April 1995 to September 2000, the school building was renovated and expanded in several sections while teaching was still going on. From 2022, the buildings are to be replaced by buildings constructed in parallel.
