history

The integrated comprehensive school in Weststadt started its school operations in 1971 and was initially housed in the Rothenburg elementary school building. On July 18, 1972, the contract was awarded for the construction of the integrated comprehensive school Weststadt. The topping-out ceremony for the then new building took place on June 28, 1973.

On August 15, 1974, school operations began in the building of the Integrated Comprehensive School Braunschweig-Weststadt, which was initially only partially usable. On June 2, 1975, the Weststadt branch of the public library opened in the building of the integrated comprehensive school. On November 18, 1975 the official opening of the former new building of the Integrated Comprehensive School Braunschweig-Weststadt took place.

At the council meeting on June 30, 1981, the city council decided to rename the integrated comprehensive school Weststadt to "Wilhelm-Bracke-Gesamtschule". On September 17, 1981, the name was finally changed to "Wilhelm Bracke Comprehensive School, Integrated Comprehensive School West".

On September 1, 1989, the integrated comprehensive school Franzsches Feld opened in Braunschweig on Grünewaldstrasse, and the employees of the Wilhelm-Bracke-Gesamtschule were also involved in its preparation and development. In the same year, the number of classes per new year was reduced from eight to six.

A demolition of the old building was planned from 2009 and a new building northwest of the old location was planned.

On May 31, 2011, as a result of a council meeting , the Braunschweig-based Nibelungen-Wohnbau-GmbH received the order to tender the new school building across Europe, to build it and to maintain it for 30 years. During this time the city of Braunschweig acts as a tenant. One day later, the continental invitation to tender starts with a total cost volume of 34.6 million euros. At the end of November, the jury decided in favor of a design by an architectural office also based in Braunschweig.

The construction work for the passive house began on April 3, 2013, the topping-out ceremony took place on September 30, 2013. In July 2014, the work on the shell was almost completely completed and most of the scaffolding was dismantled.

On December 19, 2014, scheduled classes took place in the old building for the last time. After the Christmas holidays 2014/2015, the 1366 students and around 120 teachers moved into the new premises on January 6, 2015.

On the site of the old Wilhelm-Bracke-Gesamtschule, a new residential quarter with around 200 inexpensive rental and owner-occupied apartments for a total of around 35 million euros is to be built by 2019; Nibelungen-Wohnau-GmbH is also responsible for this.

School profile

Six classes are taught per year (5–10).

The school has three schoolyards, a sports field, a school garden and two sports halls, one of which is shared with the adjoining elementary school, and a larger hall that comes from the old building.

The Wilhelm Bracke Comprehensive School has been awarded the title Environmental School in Europe several times .

It was nominated for the German School Prize in 2014, making it one of the 15 best schools in Germany.

architecture

New Wilhelm Bracke Comprehensive School

It has three levels and is divided into three buildings, which are architecturally connected. The main entrance is in building part A, where all the specialist rooms, auditorium, administration, the spacious foyer and the leisure area ("swallow's nest") hanging from the ceiling are located. Building A also has a basement where the main toilets for the students are located. The classrooms, each with a so-called marketplace, are located in buildings B and C, around which a year group settles. There is no additional upper level area, but the upper level lessons mostly take place on the second floor in building section C. The public district library is also located in building C on the ground floor. The three floors connect a total of eight staircases, from which the main staircase with its seating is fundamentally different.

Old Wilhelm Bracke Comprehensive School

Most of the classrooms (grades 6 to 13) were on the first floor. On the ground floor there was Schulstrasse, where the students could stay during the breaks, the free lockers as well as the administration and several common rooms such as the cafeteria, library and forum. The colors green and orange dominated.
