Hamburg-Volksdorf ( Low German : Volksdbod ) is a district in the northeast of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . It is assigned to the Wandsbek district . Its name comes from Volcwardesdorpe and has its origins in the name of the village founder Volkward.

geography

Volksdorf borders on Schleswig-Holstein to the east, north and northeast . The largest city there (in the Stormarn district) is Ahrensburg . To the northwest, Volksdorf adjoins Bergstedt , to the west to the Sasel district and to the southwest to the Farmsen-Berne district . Delimited by the Volksdorfer Wald with the Mellenberg as the highest elevation in the district, Meiendorf , a district of the Rahlstedt district, connects to the south .

history

Volksdorf 1905

The area - like the neighboring Meiendorf - was already settled in the Stone Age. This is evidenced by found flint axes, scrapers and arrowheads from this time. At that time the area consisted of tundra steppe. There were also plenty of finds from the later Bronze Age , namely one of the largest treasures in Hamburg. During excavation work for the small railway line at the beginning of the 20th century, neck rings, arm spirals and a hanging basin were uncovered, which in prehistory were probably sunk for cultic reasons.

The first documentary mention in the Middle Ages took place in 1296. Volksdorf originally belonged to Stormarn , but its income went to the Harvestehude monastery . In 1437 the then landlord pledged Volksdorf together with other villages to Hamburg, but the pledge was never released. Volksdorf thus became one of the Hamburg forest villages . The peasants were obliged to do manual and clamping services to a forest lord appointed as administrator. In the 16th century, Volksdorf expanded to include the neighboring corridors of the Herkenkrug and the fields of the village of Lottbek. In 1830 there was a far-reaching administrative reform, in which Volksdorf was incorporated into the newly created rulership of the Geestlande. At that time there were around 400 residents in Volksdorf. From 1867 the Hamburg merchant Heinrich Ohlendorff leased the Volksdorf hunting rights. He bought several hooves, built a country house and ran a modern large farm. He pushed the traffic development of Volksdorf forward and so the small railway from Altrahlstedt to Volksdorf was put into operation in 1904. Since 1920 the Walddörferbahn led directly to Barmbek on the Hamburg subway network and made Volksdorf attractive as a place to live for other Hamburgers. Further new development areas were added in 1948. In 1949/1951, as part of the reorganization of the Hamburg administration, the local office area Walddörfer in the Wandsbek district, which existed until 2007.

population

The Volksdorf population is made up as follows (data from the North Statistics Office, as of December 2016):

  • Total population: 20,625
  • Minor quota: 20.2%, well above the Hamburg average of 16.2%.
  • Share of households with children: 25.3%, well above the Hamburg average of 17.8%.
  • Elderly rate (65-year-olds and older): 26.2%, well above the Hamburg average of 18.3%.
  • Proportion of foreigners: 6.3%, is well below the Hamburg average of 16.7%.
  • Share of benefit recipients according to SGBII (Hartz IV): 3.6%, well below the Hamburg average of 10.3%
  • Unemployment rate: 2.6%, well below the Hamburg average of 5.3%.

Volksdorf is one of the wealthy districts of Hamburg. The average annual income per taxpayer was around 63,763 euros in 2013 and is significantly higher than the Hamburg average (39,054 euros).

Religions

In Volksdorf there are two Lutheran churches in one parish: the Church at Rockenhof and the Church of St. Gabriel. The community center St. Johannes had to be closed in 2002 due to lack of money. The Catholic Church is represented by the Heilig Kreuz community. In addition, there is the Hamburg-Volksdorf congregation in Vörn Barkholt as a free church as well as the Lukas Church of the Christian Community north of the Catholic congregation and a New Apostolic Church in the Eulenkrugpfad.

Culture and sights

The town house coral with the cinema " Coral cinema " with two cinema halls, two (music) pubs and internet cafe is the center of cultural life in Volksdorf.

Historical farmhouses and farmhouses can be seen in the Volksdorf museum village . Trade days are held four to five times a year, at which earlier craft techniques and rural life in the past can be seen.

The association for concerts of young artists in Spiekerhus e. V. (founded 1975) organizes six chamber music concerts in the museum village every year.

The association Kulturkreis Walddörfer e. V. was founded in 1978 to enable the residents of Volksdorf and the surrounding area to attend more cultural events in their living area. The voluntarily run association has around 450 members and mostly offers around 20 events (theater, concerts, readings, lectures, cabaret, cabaret, city tours) annually in the Ohlendorff'schen Villa. The association has also successfully tried to preserve the Ohlendorff'sche Villa (listed building from 1928 for Hans von Ohlendorff [1888–1967], architect: Erich Elingius ) as a place for cultural events. After a successful referendum in 2008 - after long negotiations - the building was extensively refurbished and renovated in 2013/2014. On August 30, 2014, the Hamburg Senator for Culture Barbara Kisseler handed over the building to the newly established Ohlendorff'sche Villa Foundation for public use for cultural purposes.

The “Bürgererverein Walddörfer” organizes civic engagement for communal issues and mediates between authorities and the concerns of the neighborhood residents.

The association "Scouts & Pathfinder Association Northern Lights eV" has been running nature conservation programs for children and young people in the Wulfsdorfer Weg through conservation measures for the Volksdorfer Aue for over 40 years.

Concerts take place almost weekly in the churches of St. Gabriel and at the Rockenhof .

Every year on the first weekend in September, the Volksdorf district festival takes place with fireworks and a bike race.

In the center of Volksdorf is the White Rose Square with the monument in honor of the White Rose resistance fighters (by Franz Reckert 1978), whose memorial plaque was supplemented in 1993 with the names of the dead from the White Rose in Hamburg .

Nature reserves

Volksdorfer Teichwiesen nature reserve

Two of Hamburg's 35 nature reserves are in Volksdorf . On the one hand, there are the Volksdorfer pond meadows through which the Saselbek flows . The well-preserved tunnel valley was placed under protection in 1993 and is home to threatened species . The Duvenwischen nature reserve has also existed since April 2019 .

Buildings and sports

The basis for the construction of the Volksdorf school center was the Walddörfer grammar school in Fritz Schumacher's classic clinker style on Im Allhorn street. The Allhorn Stadium, which was completely renovated in 2014 and provided with artificial turf, also belongs to the site. This traditional stadium is the venue of the local sports club, Walddörfer SV .
The
smokehouse belonging to the ensemble of the museum village , which burned down in July 2009 and was rebuilt in 2012, has once again become a well-attended event space. There the u. a. Volksdorfer Schachklub has its seat, the letting is taken over by the local youth club Volksdorf like before.

The district has the Parkbad operated by Bäderland Hamburg GmbH , an indoor pool with a children's and toddler pool, a heated outdoor pool and a sunbathing area.

Economy and Infrastructure

The "White Rose" square

Volksdorf is largely characterized by residential areas. There are supermarkets, specialist shops, cafés and a post office in a pedestrian zone around the “White Rose” square. At the intersection of Wiesenhöfen / Eulenkrugstrasse is the "Unser Viertel" (formerly "Eulenkrug-Passage") commercial building with 180 underground parking spaces, which houses a supermarket, offices, several medical practices and, since the beginning of 2018, the public library. As a replacement for the customer center at the Volksdorf underground station, which has been closed for cost reasons, a mobile service with the same services is offered in the rooms of the library on two days a week.

A special attraction is the Volksdorf weekly market, which is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the market area at the underground station. It is regularly stocked by more than 100 market traders and attracts buyers not only from Volksdorf, but also from the neighboring districts. The weekly market is moved to the town center on two Saturdays a year.

In addition to a large number of service companies, especially medical practices, physio-therapeutic practices, tax consultants, lawyers, etc., a number of modern craft businesses are located in Hamburg-Volksdorf. In addition, the "Amalie Sieveking Hospital" is located in Hamburg-Volksdorf, to provide for the population in the forest villages with a very large number of employees.

traffic

Transport connections exist through the U-Bahn line 1 of Hamburger Hochbahn AG . In addition to the Volksdorf stop, there are three other stops in Volksdorf: in the north of the Buckhorn district , in the east, Buchenkamp and in the south, the Meiendorfer Weg stop . The district is also connected to three bus routes. The former Bundesstrasse 75 (named there as Meiendorfer Strasse ) connects Volksdorf to the south with downtown Hamburg and to the north with Ahrensburg . The Farmsener Landstrasse also connects Volksdorf with downtown Hamburg.

schools

There are four primary schools and three secondary schools in the district. The former are the school on the Teichwiesen west of the town center , the Ahrensburger Weg elementary school near the center (built in 1997), the Eulenkrugstraße elementary school south-east of the town center and the Buckhorn elementary school north of the town center . The secondary schools are the Walddörfer district school , which emerged from the Walddörfer comprehensive school in 2010 , the Buckhorn grammar school, and the Walddörfer grammar school, founded in 1930 and designed by Fritz Schumacher and originally planned as an elementary school and grammar school .
