The Bäderland Hamburg GmbH is the operating company for urban public swimming pools in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . It was founded in 1995 as a subsidiary of Hamburger Wasserwerke and is now part of the municipal holding company HGV .
Bäderland operates 27 indoor and outdoor pools with a total water area of around 45,000 m², which are visited by around 4.4 million bathers every year. Of this, more than ten percent (465,000) is attributable to the “Festland” leisure pool in Altona, which opened in 2009 and is by far the most visited. Other well-known pools are the Alsterschwimmhalle or the Kaifu-Bad in Eimsbüttel , which opened in 1895 as Stadtbad Hohe Weide , and is also the headquarters of Bäderland GmbH. In addition, in the winter months, Bäderland operates an ice rink in Farmsen and the Dulsbergbad as part of the Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein Olympic base . At this location, Bäderland also acts as a builder for other sports facilities on behalf of the city, e.g. B. for a beach volleyball facility or a judo and handball hall opened in 2019.
history
The history of public bathing culture in Hamburg began in 1793 when a bathing ship went into operation on the Inner Alster at the instigation of the Patriotic Society . It was later moved to the Outer Alster near the Lombard bridge and replaced by the stationary Donner'sche bathing establishment. In the course of the 19th century, numerous river bathing establishments were added on the Alster , Bille and Elbe , mainly with the aim of curbing the random "wild" bathing that was common up to now and directing it into "decent" channels.
The first covered hot bathing establishment was opened at Schweinemarkt in 1855 - however, the facility, designed by William Lindley based on the English model, was not a swimming pool, but only offered bathtubs, showers and washing facilities. The striking circular building survived the Second World War and was demolished in 1963 in favor of today's Saturn car park. The first real swimming pool was built on Schaarmarkt in 1881 - the initiative for this came from Hamburg shipowners who wanted to reduce the number of fatal accidents among dock workers by promoting swimming lessons . In 1895 the oldest still preserved and listed Stadtbad Hohe Weide (today Kaifu-Bad ) followed. Further baths were built at the Lübecker Tor in St. Georg , in Barmbek , Hammerbrook and Eppendorf (Holthusenbad) up to the beginning of the First World War . In the Weimar Republic, no new indoor pools were built, but new outdoor pools opened in Lattenkamp (1926) and Ohlsdorf (1927) , the latter being the first institution without gender segregation. While these were still supplied with river water from the nearby Alster, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer open-air pool , which opened in 1938, was considered the most modern sports pool in Germany, with tap water and heated all year round.
After many baths were damaged or completely destroyed in the Second World War, the focus in the first post-war years was initially on the construction of inexpensive summer outdoor pools. At its peak in the mid-1960s, there were just under 30 outdoor pools in the city. As the first new hall project, planning for the later Alsterschwimmhalle began at the end of the 1950s , but completion took until 1973. By 1980 another ten new district pools were built as standardized type buildings ; However, the demand did not rise to the same extent, so that the operation of the baths became increasingly deficit. In the 1980s, older pools were closed for the first time, and in 1995 the entire pool operation was spun off from the Hamburg waterworks to the newly founded Bäderland Hamburg GmbH .
