former men's hall, Bismarckbad

The Bismarckbad in Hamburg-Ottensen was an indoor swimming pool that was built in 1911 on the corner of Bismarckstraße (today Ottenser Hauptstraße ) and Scheel-Plessen-Straße right next to the Altona train station . It was built according to the requirements of the time according to plans by the city building officer Emil Brandt. The construction costs at that time amounted to 1,180,000 marks. The system was operated by the Hamburg waterworks until 1995 and then by Bäderland Hamburg GmbH .

For women and men there were initially separate halls as well as a separate dog bath . A large hall with 78 changing rooms was available for the men and a smaller hall with 48 changing rooms for the women. There were also departments with tubs, showers, sweat and mud baths, and mud and radium treatments, relaxation and massage rooms were also offered. There were also offers for laundry cleaning and storage. The dog bath, which existed until 1980, had a water basin, shear room and drying room.

The facilities were used intensively by the population, also considering that the surrounding apartments and workplaces often only offered insufficient washing and cleaning facilities. In the course of time, the Bismarckbad changed through multiple renovations. There was also a fast-food restaurant, the tubs and showers were converted into a sauna , solarium with additional water slides and whirlpools .

School and sport swimming was organized as a program . Pregnant women, babies and toddlers swimming as well as gymnastics offered.

In 2007 the Bismarckbad was demolished despite violent protests and shops and restaurants were built in its place.
