The Hamburg Waterworks GmbH ( HWW ) is the oldest public water utilities on the European continent. It supplies around two million people in Hamburg and 21 surrounding communities with drinking water. The HWW are 100% owned by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg via the HGV .

history

In the 14th century, the first pipeline systems were created in Hamburg , which led spring water to properties.

From the 16th century onwards, the “Alster-Wasserkünste” supplied cooperatively organized citizens and private individuals. The deteriorating water quality led to the construction of two private "Elbe water arts". In parallel to these competing supply systems, which existed side by side, there were wells, water carriers and water vehicles in the city.

The fire disaster of 1842 , in which a third of the city burned down, led to the political decision to build a public, central water supply according to the plans of William Lindley . In 1848 the "Stadtwasserkunst" started operations in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort . Clarified Elbe water was pumped into containers in the attics of the townhouses. The cholera epidemic of 1892 forced the Hamburg Senate to ensure the completion of the Kaltehofe filtration plant .

The declining quality of the Elbe water led to the search for alternatives and the development of processes to treat good drinking water from groundwater. The Billbrook groundwater works began operations in 1905, and the Curslack groundwater works in 1928 . The gradual conversion of the drinking water supply from Elbe water to groundwater lasted until 1964. Since then, drinking water in Hamburg has only been treated from groundwater.

On April 1, 1924, the municipal water art belonging to the building deputation was converted into the Hamburger Wasserwerke GmbH. The sole shareholder is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, today through the HGV Hamburger Gesellschaft für Vermögens- und Beteiligungsmanagement mbH .

Drinking water supply

To supply the Hamburg areas of Großhansdorf , Walddörfer and Farmsen and the Prussian city of Wandsbek , the "Wasserwerke Hamburg-Ost GmbH" was established in 1928. From the cities of Hamburg, Wandsbek, Altona , Harburg-Wilhelmsburg as well as 27 surrounding Prussian communities, Hamburg emerged in its current boundaries in 1937 through the Greater Hamburg Act . The Hamburg waterworks were responsible for the water supply for the entire area. It now also took over the Altona and Harburg waterworks .

Bathing establishments and swimming pools

Simultaneously with the establishment in 1924, the operation of the hot baths was handed over to the Hamburger Wasserwerke. Until 1995, Hamburg's public swimming pools were operated by the HWW, with the exception of a few natural lakes and private pools. Thereafter, this operating division was transferred to Bäderland Hamburg GmbH.
