The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen nature reserve is located in the Volksdorf district of Hamburg at the confluence of the Saselbek and Gussau rivers . The site received its protection status on July 6, 1993, making it one of the younger nature reserves in Hamburg. Today it is looked after by the BUND and the Hamburg Botanical Association.

description

The area is about 30 hectares and consists of a wetland with two ponds, through which two streams flow. The flora is very species-rich and contains a very large number of rare species in a comparatively small area by Hamburg standards. The diverse habitats, consisting of wetlands with forest edges, favor a varied fauna.

The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen are one of the last remaining tunnel valleys in Hamburg, a formation that was created during the Vistula Ice Age by melt waters flowing under the ice in the immediate vicinity of the ice edge near Hamburg. Compared to other tunnel valleys such as B. the Stellmoorer Tunneltal , the Volksdorfer Tunneltal is extremely short and therefore represents a geological peculiarity. Today you can only see a gentle valley basin, the originally much deeper valley was filled with more than 14 m high soil layers. It came to the formation of fens with extensive alder forests. Until 1882 there was a large pond here, the water of which was used to operate mills. After it was drained, the area was used as pasture and in 1911 today's ponds were created for better drainage.

Today, flowing and still waters, reed beds, quarry forest and other woody stands, as well as meadows and pastures with moist subsoil, are closely connected and offer wet meadow species good living conditions. Typical of this are native orchids such as the broad-leaved and the spotted orchid as well as botanical rarities such as the devil's bite and the yellow meadow rue . The wildlife consists of an abundant insect population, many amphibians, and rare birds. Of particular note are the great royal dragonfly , the darter and the marsh insect , and the amphibian moor frog and the common frog . Breeding birds are the lapwing , common snipe , whorl and great crested grebe . The kingfisher can often be found in the area, even if it does not breed here.

In order to protect the area from further pollution and undesirable nutrient input, a pre-cleaning system for the surface runoff water from the Volksdorf town center was built on the western edge in 1995. The system is a combination of sedimentation basins with a planted soil filter downstream and in this way represents a pilot system for Hamburg.
