The Holzhafen is a harbor basin in the south of the Billwerder Bay in Hamburg and a nature reserve named after this harbor basin .

Nature reserve

The nature reserve was designated as the 32nd nature reserve in the city of Hamburg in March 2013. It extends over an area of around 80  hectares and includes the southern part of the Kaltehofe peninsula as well as the water and freshwater mudflats of the wooden harbor. In addition, an area in the south of the Holzhafen up to Autobahn 1 and the wooded area between the yacht harbor and the Autobahn are included in the protected area. The area in the south of the Holzhafen was diked until 2008. As a compensatory measure for the six-lane expansion of Autobahn 7, it was re- diked and creeks created. Here develop floodplain and reed areas. The nature reserve “ Auenlandschaft Obere Tideelbe ” connects to the south of Autobahn 1 .

The designation of the Holzhafen as a nature reserve also serves as a compensatory measure for the partial filling in of the Mühlenberger Loch in the course of the Airbus plant expansion and the lost mudflats. The nature reserve is also registered as an EU bird sanctuary . The BUND criticized the fact that the Holzhafen was a de facto bird sanctuary even before it was placed under protection and that the ecological value of the area was not recreated. It could therefore not for the consistency assurance of the Natura 2000 -network be used.

The bank areas in the Holzhafen are protected over long stretches with revetments made of stones and slag. These are to be dismantled in order to enable natural settlement of the shore. The water areas in the east of the Holzhafen are partially cut out of the nature reserve. Here the fairway to the marina runs in the Alte Dove Elbe .

The Holzhafen has extensive, tide- influenced water and mud flats. Here are u. a. Common wigeon , gadfly and pintail . The Holzhafen is an important resting area for migratory birds such as shovel , teal and shelduck as well as other water birds and waders . At the same time, it is an important feeding, spawning and growing area for fish. In the nature reserve in Hamburg endangered plant species such as lancet-leaved frog-spoon , spreading ragwort and hemlock water fennel can be found.

The nature reserve is easily visible from the main dike moor canal.
