Köhlbrandt staircase

From the banks of the Elbe at the confluence of Carsten-Rehder-Straße and Große Elbstraße , the Köhlbrandt staircase in Hamburg-Altona-Altstadt, inaugurated in 1887, can be seen with its monumental head building. Until the 1960s, this facility was used by thousands of workers every day on their way between the densely built-up residential areas in the upper town and the ferry pier and the port and commercial operations on the banks of the Elbe. Up until the Second World War , there was also a terminus for the Hamburg tramway here .

In the middle of the wall surface there is a fountain which is decorated with the coats of arms of Altona and Prussia . Above it, the two gods Mercury and Neptune are depicted as symbols for trade and the sea.

The Köhlbrandtreppe as an ensemble together with the neighboring apartment building Köhlbrandtreppe 1 has been a listed building since April 5, 2001 .
