The Große Elbstraße is a street in the Altona district of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . It runs for a length of approx. 1.7 kilometers parallel to the Elbe from the street "St. Pauli Fischmarkt" in the direction of Neumühlen . The Augustinum and the museum harbor Oevelgönne are located near its western end below the Heine Park . The street, laid out at the beginning of the 19th century, has numerous cultural monuments .

From the industrial park to the Elbmeile

"Former HW Lange harbor mill, founded in 1841 as one of the first steam mills in Northern Germany, massive brick buildings from 1880, later expanded and stocked."

The Große Elbstraße was originally an industrial area that was used by the fishing industry . In the 21st century this is still located in the street, but it has been and is being supplemented by other industries .

Fishing industry

Since the 1880s, Altona has become the main landing point for the German fishing fleet . This required an expansion of the port facilities and in 1895/96 the construction of the fish auction hall at the newly built fishing port in Grosse Elbstrasse. In the 21st century, the fishing industry in the western section of the street is an independent quarter. The part of the Große Elbstraße facing Ottensen is characterized by the buildings of Fischmarkt Hamburg-Altona GmbH . In the street there are still remnants of the Altona warehouse district and port-related industrial companies. An example of the latter is the building of the former HW Lange harbor mill . The preserved Köhlbrandt staircase , inaugurated at the end of the 19th century , created a connection between the residential areas in Altona's old town and the harbor. The Hamburg-Altona seaman's mission is based in the street .

The Große Elbstraße is part of the Elbmeile , which was founded by the "elbmeile" interest group , which was converted into the elbmeile Hamburg eV association in 2007 . A variety of companies and gastronomic offers can be found between the fish market and Neumühlen . The furniture design area is represented by Stilwerk , for example . The Fischereihafen restaurant , which was run by Rüdiger Kowalke until his death in early 2019, is also located there. The Hamburg Cruise Center Altona and Dockland are in close proximity to this, but not in the street itself . The Altonaer Kaispeicher located in the street serves as a location for various events . The Kristall Tower is also located on Grosse Elbstrasse.
