Neumühlen describes a place in the Hamburg district of Ottensen . At the same Neumühlen is the name of here on the banks of the Elbe along leading road and HADAG -Fähranlegers which, however, already in the neighboring to Hamburg-Othmarschen belonging Övelgönne located.

history

Neumühlen was annexed to Ottensen in 1864 and together with the latter was elevated to the status of town of Ottensen in 1871; In 1889 this was incorporated into Altona and in 1938, like all of Altona, to Hamburg.

A major change away from the village character took place in Neumühlen with the construction of industrial plants. A gas works was built here in 1857, the C. Hedrich food and feed factory in 1884, the  Altonas electricity works since 1912/13 ( Electricitätswerk Unterelbe , EMU) and, after its demolition, a large fish crate store until the 1980s. The waterfront was opened up by the Altona port railway , which had a direct connection to the Altona train station and the national rail network through the Schellfisch tunnel . After 2000, an ensemble of office buildings was built there on a flood-proof polder, which form the westernmost part of Hamburg's so-called “pearl necklace”, a series of new buildings on the northern bank of the river.

The Union-Kühlhaus, built in the mid-1920s on the north bank of the Elbe, was particularly striking and served as a sign of identification for ships traveling on the Elbe from far away. The freezing of fish at sea, which is common today, means that it was no longer needed. Its characteristic facade was originally intended to be retained when it was renovated in the early 1990s. Due to a fire and static problems, a completely new building was subsequently approved, but it was given a similar shape and now houses the senior citizens' residence Augustinum Hamburg .

The popular garden restaurant Rainville was located on the high slope of the Geest until 1867. After its demolition was here on a new retaining wall with the newly created so named Rainville terraces the company building New Rainville built. Its operation was stopped after the First World War and the building was initially used by various authorities. The Prussian administration erected the building Rainvilleterrasse 4 of the former Altona and later Hamburg seafaring school , which still exists today, in its place in 1935 , which was closed in 2005 and the building was listed.
