The Augustinum Hamburg is a senior citizens' residence of the Augustinum Group located in the Neumühlen district of Hamburg . The building of the Augustinum was built in 1991 and is externally a replica of the Union-Kühlhaus previously located at this point , which was a listed building , but could not be preserved due to structural defects.

Idea and commissioning

Union cold store, 1963

The foundation stone of the cold store was held in 1926 after the then independent city of Altona a contract with the company Co. Weddel & had closed. This was a Germany-based subsidiary of the British company Cold Storage Company Ltd. and contractually guaranteed that the planned building would be used exclusively as a cold store for the next 100 years.

On the basis of this contract, the architect HW Müller and the Hamburg architects Elingius und Schramm designed a building on a pile foundation with a clinker facade and 12 storeys of different heights, which offered a total floor space of 7,000 m² and thus space for around 7,000 t of refrigerated goods. It was used to cool and store the fish caught off Hamburg . The cold store has been operated by Union Kühlhaus GmbH , after which the building was publicly named, since it was first used.

Usage history

The clinker brick facades, which are structured with horizontal concrete strips, and the expressionistically designed "crown" of the exactly 38.36 m high building meant that the Union-Kühlhaus was declared an industrial monument shortly after its completion . The National Socialists used the associated reputation to exaggerate German creativity and architecture, and as a result numerous representatives of the press declared the building to be a landmark of Hamburg.

After the building temporarily served as troop accommodation for British soldiers towards the end of World War II , it continued to be used as a cold store until the early 1970s. After that it was empty for a long time, but was to be preserved as a monument . After submitting various conversion plans , the city decided to leave the building to the Augustinum Group.

Demolition and construction

Which then created building surveys , however, revealed that the former Union coldstore not stable due to substantial damage and therefore not tag capable was. In a contractually concluded compromise with the official monument preservation authorities , the new user undertook to demolish the building and have it rebuilt in as similar a form as possible. In the course of the demolition work that began in 1991, the building burned out almost completely.

With the new building according to plans by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partner (gmp) , the condition was followed to maintain or restore the dimensions and the external appearance of the former cold store. For this reason, the apartments have neither balconies nor loggias . Apart from the windowing necessary for residential use, the facades were largely reconstructed true to the original , and a glass dome was added.
