The Leonhardt & Blumberg shipping company was founded in Hamburg in 1903 by partners Adolf Leonhardt and Arthur Blumberg .

history

The Leonhardt & Blumberg shipping company was founded in Hamburg in 1903. After the death of Arthur Blumberg in 1922, the shipping company was continued by the Leonhardt family. After World War II, all ships were lost or delivered. Today the shipping company is managed in the third generation by Frank Leonhardt . He is a member of the executive board of the Association of German Shipowners and was its chairman until November 12, 2008.

In these more than 100 years , Leonhardt & Blumberg has operated 150 ships , which in the past were essentially general cargo and bulk carriers.

Shipping company today

In addition to refrigerated ships, the shipping company's fleet consists mainly of modern container ships with a capacity between 1,000 TEU and 4,500 TEU. These ships are engaged in worldwide traffic under time charter agreements with various liner shipping companies.

All functions of the shipping company, such as management, chartering, technology and equipment, sea personnel, insurance , finance and new construction matters are carried out centrally in the company's own office building on the banks of the Elbe in Hamburg.

The Hansa Stavanger is kidnapped by pirates

In April 2009 the container ship " Hansa Stavanger " belonging to the shipping company was boarded and kidnapped by pirates off the Somali coast. Only in August 2009 the ship and the 24 crew members were released after paying a ransom of 2.75 million US dollars . Shortly after the release, the captain of the "Hansa Stavanger" was dismissed. In April 2013, the container ship " Hansa Marburg " was attacked off the coast of Equatorial Guinea and four crew members were taken hostage.

The trade unions ver.di and the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) accuse the shipping company of not signing the ITF's collective agreements, which serve as an international minimum standard for the remuneration of seafaring personnel, in order to be able to pay disproportionately low wages. In connection with the protests of the trade unions, among other things, there was a boycott of the unloading of a Leonhardt & Blumberg ship in the port of Hamburg .

Current

The Leonhardt & Blumberg shipping company owns 36 container ships ranging in size from 1500 to 3600 TEU and employs around 1000 people on land and at sea. In 2017 they merged with the shipping company Buss Shipping and founded a joint shipping company Leonhardt & Blumberg Shipmanagement. According to the company, 17 container feeder ships between 880 and 2800 TEU belong to the Buss fleet.

The combined fleet of 55 container ships has an average age of eight years and mostly belongs to the feeder segment.
