history

Gerhard (Gerd) Buss, born on July 22, 1884, founded the Gerd Buss Stauerei in Hamburg in 1920 . Buss came from an old East Frisian family and previously worked as a captain at the Oldenburg-Portuguese Steamship Rhederei (OPDR). On August 1st, 1920 the stevedoring began its activities, within a week a foreman and a few stevedores ( dock workers ) completed the first steamer of 300 tons.

During the Second World War , German merchant shipping and thus Buss' business activities largely came to a standstill. From 1945 the company was rebuilt by Gerd and his brother Hinrich Buss and won back their old customers after resuming German merchant shipping.

After the death of the company founder Gerd Buss in 1954 and his brother Hinrich Buss in 1966, Gerd's son Jürgen Buss became the sole personally liable partner. In the 1960s, the classic stevedoring business declined due to the beginning of containerization. Therefore Buss expanded into other port service areas and locations.

In 1970 the company had more than 800 permanent employees and meanwhile had a total of eleven port operations that offered an all-round port service. On January 1, 1971, the Buss shareholders and the August Bolten shipping company founded Binder KG . This merger was financially and tax-wise for both companies - and the shareholders had been on friendly terms for a long time.

In the 1980s, the Buss company developed into further successful start-ups. The Gerd Buss Drehtainer deals with the construction, repair and cleaning of special containers. The DeCeTe in Duisburg is a container rail and inland waterway terminal.

In 1991 Johann Killinger, a former partner of the August Bolten shipping company, joined the Buss Group. Due to the advancing containerization, he pushed ahead with diversification during the 1990s and opened up the new business areas of chemical and pharmaceutical logistics and logistics real estate.

The Buss Group had to cut a large number of jobs in the 1990s as the business with conventional general cargo gradually declined. Stowing non-containerized goods has become a niche business. Over time, today's business areas were established.

In 2002, Hans Helmut Killinger transferred all of Buss' shares to his son Johann Killinger, who became managing director of the Buss Group. In 2003, Buss founded the issuing house Buss Capital , which placed the first container funds in the same year. In 2004, the logistics property developer Ixocon was founded , and in 2006, Buss Safelox, a new market presence for the group's chemical and pharmaceutical logistics activities was created. In 2009 the hazardous goods storage division was sold to the Lehnkering company. In the same year the shipping company Buss Shipping was founded.
