Johann August Gottfried Bolten (born January 23, 1812 in Kloddram , † July 19, 1887 in Hamburg ) was a German shipbroker and owner .

Life

August Bolten was born as the son of the lawyer Johann Joachim Bolten and his wife Anna Margarethe, née Rentzel, on Gut Kloddram (today a district of Vellahn). His father had acquired this estate in 1798 after having previously worked as a canon in Hamburg . His grandfather was the Hamburg city ​​physicist Joachim Friedrich Bolten .

August Bolten was a partner in William Miller's ship brokerage, having been employed there as a clerk since 1831 . In 1844 he was the sole owner of the brokerage. It traded under the name Aug. Bolten Wm. Miller's successor . Bolten was one of the founders of several Hamburg shipping companies. Sun led his efforts in 1847 establishing the Hamburg America Line and 1869 establishing the Hamburg-Brazilian-Steamship Company , from 1871, with a share of 28.5% of Bolten's shipping company Hamburg-South American Steamship Company emerged . In addition to his ship brokerage activities and several investments in shipping companies, he ran his own shipping company since 1866.

In 1860 he married the pastor's daughter Mathilde Büsch; the marriage remained childless.

The shipping company Aug. Bolten Wm. Miller's successor is still in the seventh generation of family ownership. Today's TT-Line also goes back to the August Bolten shipping company.
