history

The Duisburg company Lehnkering & Cie. was founded by Carl Lehnkering in 1872 and converted into a stock corporation in 1907 , the majority of which was taken over by Metallgesellschaft in 1923 . At least until the outbreak of World War I, the company also acted as a representative of many domestic and foreign shipping companies, including the steam shipping company "Neptun" , the Woermann Line and North German Lloyd as well as Austrian Lloyd , the Russian Society for Steam Shipping and Trade and Det Østasiatiske Kompagni .

The first inland barge made of aluminum started in 1960 , manufactured by Hilgers shipyard for Lehnkering. After the affiliation of other companies, the company, now trading as Lehnkering Montan Transport AG, became majority owned by Vereinigte Tanklager- und Transportmittel GmbH in Hamburg in 1994. After further acquisitions, the company was renamed Lehnkering AG in 1997. In the following year, the merger of the logistics activities of Lehnkering and VTG resulted in VTG-Lehnkering AG as a subsidiary of the Hapag-Lloyd Group within the Preussag Group . In the course of the transformation of Preussag to TUI , Lehnkering GmbH was formed by splitting off the bulk and special logistics division from what is now VTG AG , again with its headquarters in Duisburg. In 2004 Lehnkering Holding GmbH became the property of the European investment company Triton . In October 2011, Lehnkering was sold to the South African logistics giant Imperial for around EUR 270 million . As part of a new growth and brand strategy of the parent company IMPERIAL Logistics International BV & Co. KG, Lehnkering GmbH was renamed IMPERIAL Chemical Logistics GmbH on March 31, 2016 and is now part of the IMPERIAL Supply Chain Solutions division.
