The Finkenwerder Süderelbe is a nature reserve in the Hamburg districts of Finkenwerder in the Hamburg-Mitte district and Neuenfelde and Francop in the Harburg district .

The nature reserve is around 100  hectares in size. It borders directly on the " Westerweiden " nature reserve . The area has been a nature reserve since June 17, 1997. It emerged from the 170 hectare nature reserve "Alte Süderelbe", which was designated in 1989 and was divided into the nature reserves "Finkenwerder Süderelbe" and "Westerweiden" for administrative reasons.

The nature reserve is located in the west of the city of Hamburg in the Altes Land, southeast of the Airbus factory in Hamburg-Finkenwerder . It places the western part of the Alte Süderelbe , a former branch of the Elbe , with its banks under protection. The Alte Süderelbe is separated from the tidal influence of the Elbe. In many areas it is only up to half a meter deep. There is a connection to the Köhlfleet via a pumping station in the floodplain. The opening of the Alte Süderelbe, which was sealed off from the tidal Elbe after the storm surge of 1962 , was initially planned, among other things. a. as a compensatory measure for the port expansion in Altenwerder and the rinsing field in Francop. However, after the expansion of the Airbus site and the extension of the runway of the airfield, the opening of the Old South Elbe was no longer possible in the originally planned form, so it was ultimately dispensed with.

The nature reserve is characterized by the bay-rich still waters of the Alte Süderelbe with creeks and channels. There are further still waters in the south of the nature reserve. The bank areas are occupied by tall herbaceous vegetation and reed beds . In places, alluvial forest remains can be found. The nature reserve borders mainly on grassland areas , to the south also on fruit trees .

It offers a habitat to a diverse flora and fauna. There are numerous meadow birds in the grassland areas , for which the nature reserve is of particular importance, especially together with the adjacent nature reserve "Westerweiden". The tall herbaceous vegetation and reed beds as well as the alluvial forest remains offer u. a. Marsh harrier , teal duck , oriole and bag tit have a habitat. Also, Kingfisher and ospreys can be observed here, as well as numerous are water and wading birds such as avocets , various species of ducks and shelduck find. The nature reserve is also of great importance as a resting area. Many gray and barnacle geese can be found here in winter . River common ragwort , the wiebelschmiele , also known as the marsh Schmiele , and the hemlock water fennel are just a few of the plant species found in the nature reserve.

The Hamburg Regional Association of the German Nature Conservation Union , which looks after the area, maintains two observation huts from which the nature reserve can be viewed.
