The Rhee is a nature reserve in the Hamburg district of Wilhelmsburg in the Hamburg-Mitte district .
The nature reserve is 18 hectares . The area, which is around 800 meters long and on average 200 to 220 meters wide, is located in the Elbe river splitting area, southeast of the Hamburg-Süd motorway junction between the North Elbe and federal motorway 1 and is a remnant of what was once a large tidal meadow landscape between the former Elbe islands of Georgswerder and Stillhorn . The nature reserve " Auenlandschaft Obere Tideelbe " connects to the east . To the north, the nature reserve is bordered by a road and residential buildings that run along an old dike , and to the south is an old rinsing area , which today is mainly used for agriculture.
The area is characterized by the Georgswerder Schleusengraben, an oxbow lake of the Dove Elbe , with its system of ditches and the surrounding reed beds , wet grassland and woodland. Here are the remains of the former tidal forest with white willow , black poplar and ash . The Georgswerder Schleusengraben, which occurred after the storm surge of 1962 in 1964 was separated from the tide by the main dike line and separated from the river dynamics of the Elbe, accounts for around three hectares of the nature reserve. The absence of tides and flooding has depleted flora and fauna. Elder , birch and black alder are spreading, so that the typical riparian forest vegetation develops into a scrub forest vegetation. The connection between the Georgswerder Schleusengraben and the Norderelbe has been carried out via a pumping station since 1994.
The areas north of the Georgswerder Schleusengraben would previously be used as grassland for agriculture. After being lost to farming in the 1960s, reedbeds and have Hochstaudenfluren designed to lower-lying areas and reeds and water vapors stocks. On the banks of the Georgswerder Schleusengraben, some old white willows grow, which were formerly used as head trees.
Due to its former island location, the nature reserve is an important refuge for various animal and plant species. Various bird species can be found here, including kingfisher , shoveler , sheep and gray wagtail , dragonfly species such as the endangered species great dragonfly and shiny emerald dragonfly , butterflies , grasshoppers , amphibians and snail species such as the bank leaf snail. Plant species come e.g. B. celandine , snake leek , river common ground , water star and yellow pond rose .
The area, which the nature conservation association GÖP - Society for ecological planning e. V. is under nature protection since June 22, 1981.
