The Grasbrookpark is a small neighborhood park on Grasbrookhafen in Harbor City in Hamburg-Mitte . It is located in the Am Sandtorpark / Grasbrook district between Überseequartier and the Marco Polo Terraces. Adjacent streets are north on Grasbrookpark, west street Big Grasbrook, south the Hübenerstraße and east of the San Francisco street . With the construction of the new subway line 4 , which runs directly under today's park, and the Überseequartier subway station , it was originally laid out as a pure playground on a much smaller area and opened in June 2008. This playground solution was only temporary until the construction of the subway was completed and neighboring construction work made a district park with significantly more space possible. Today's Grasbrookpark has an area of about 7100 square meters , the center of the park is the large play area for children, many devices have been taken over from the former playground and integrated into the new Grasbrookpark. It was opened in its current form in August 2013. Access to the train station is at the eastern entrance of the current park on San Francisco Street.

development

The playground at Grasbrookhafen originally had an area of around 850 square meters and was located a little further south, because the underground line of the new U4 runs directly under the current park, the construction of which took a few years. And around there were still many construction sites and some buildings and streets were not yet finished. Initially, even the orange observation tower was View Point right on the playground, he has now moved to its present location at Baakenhöft. The playground was designed as a pirate playground for children from three years of age. In the immediate vicinity of the Elbe and the Störtebeker monument within sight, the equipment has been adapted accordingly. A large pirate ship on a blue background as if it was floating was the main attraction, plus lots of wood and floating debris , swings and climbing equipment . The playground was completely fenced in to protect children and visitors from traffic and construction vehicles . When the construction work progressed further, the U4 line and the new Überseequartier underground station were completed and opened in 2012, an open space of over 7,000 square meters was created. Hübenerstraße only got a sidewalk on the south side and part of the street Am Grasbrookpark became a car-free passage for pedestrians and is now located directly at the park. The residents of the quarter played an intensive role in the planning of the park. To this end, HafenCity Hamburg GmbH initiated a participation process with children from the Katharinenschule and daycare center , their parents and other interested parties from the neighborhood . It should be a park for all generations and do justice to all future users. The design comes from the architects EMBT Arquitectes Associats from Barcelona. This was revised again after evaluating the wishes of all users involved in the planning and some things could be implemented according to the wishes . Grasbrookpark was officially opened on August 16, 2013 with a big party and program.

Furnishing

The play area takes up most of the parking area. The main material is wood. The large pirate ship with a lookout and a wobbly lifeboat has been moved to the new park and, like most other climbing equipment, is located on a sandy surface . The large climbing forest with wooden beams, suspension bridges, climbing nets and a tree house with a slide begins at the eastern entrance . Between the pirate ship and the climbing forest there is a larger area with wooden bridges , which becomes a water playground in the summer months. The willow labyrinth , which was created by hand by the labyrinth builder Frank Thimm and his team , was particularly elaborate - for climbing and hiding and providing shade in summer. At the east entrance there are two large swings on wooden beams. A small corner of mud with a water pump and several small bobble animals are distributed in the park. For smaller children there is a net swing and seesaws in the western part, as well as a trampoline for all age groups. A central path leads through the middle of the park, on the sides of the sandy areas there are many curved wooden benches with side shelves for drinks or other things. There are picnic areas with tables and a turntable on the south side of Hübenerstraße. Some fitness equipment has been set up for young people and adults and seesaws have been installed in the floor. The park was opened to the car-free street Am Grasbrookpark and a fence was dispensed with; residents there now live directly at the park. The fences facing Hübenerstrasse were largely covered by trees and plantings . Lawns and plants make up about 2000 square meters. At the opening 60 trees were counted about, including fruit and ornamental fruit trees, field maple , blood , red and hornbeam , cypress oaks and aspens , shrubs and various plants . A dog park is not there. Public toilets are located about 100 m away on the Marco Polo Terraces.

Local public transport

  • The Überseequartier underground station on the U4 line is located directly at the park on San Francisco Street
  • Bus route 111, stops at Marco-Polo-Terrassen and Überseequartier

Others

The park was planned as a district park for all residents and visitors of HafenCity with and without children for play and leisure - for relaxation and as a neighborhood get-together or for the lunch break for working people in neighboring companies. For the year 2021, a community house in a colored Swedish wood look is planned, which can be used as a meeting place - but also by groups and associations and should be available for events .
