Blohms Park (rarely also "Blohm's Park" or "Blohmspark") is an approx. 4 hectare large, listed public park in the Hamburg district of Horn . It goes back to an earlier private garden, the beginnings of which can be traced back to the 17th century. The name goes back to one of the previous owners, a brother of the shipyard's founder Hermann Blohm .

The park is located mostly on the Geesthang north of Horner highway and is "In the north of the road Rauhen home limited" and in the east of the Hertogestraße that as the park is even named after a previous owner of the site.

The park consists of three separate areas: One of the western, smaller green space along the way "Kernbek" which is bordered by a row of trees, a centrally located, large meadow with a northern small and equipped with play equipment playground . To the east, parallel to Hertogestrasse, there is the third area of the park with a dense tree population in a depression, where there is a second playground, which mainly consists of a climbing course .

In the former park only part of the historical tree population has been preserved, including Horn's presumably oldest tree, an approx. 200 year old oak with a trunk circumference of four and a half meters. In addition to the oak there is a lion sculpture made of bronze that once before Villa Ohlendorff of " guano king " Henry Ohlendorff in the neighboring district Hamm stood as a cultural monument is recorded.

history

The area of today's park used to be spread over several plots. The eastern part belonged, among others, to the Hamburg mayor Albrecht von Eitzen (1578-1653), who sold it in 1630 to the Belgian merchant family "de Hertoghe". They had a country house with a garden built here, both of which lasted at least until the end of the 18th century.

Blohms Park around 1845

The western part was bought in 1816 by the merchant Heinrich Johann Merck , founder of the trading house HJ Merck & Co. , who had the old country house demolished and replaced with a new, classicist villa. After Merck's death and several changes of ownership, Ludwig Friedrich Blohm, brother of the shipyard owner Hermann Blohm , became the new owner in 1875 .

In 1928 the last owner, Claus Heinrich Hinrichsen, left the area to the city of Hamburg, but it was not until 1934 that the city turned it into a public park. The villa became the seat of the NSDAP district leadership and was completely destroyed in the air raids in 1943 .

In 1950, the remains of the villa were torn down and the “Jugend-Europahaus” (JEH) was built in the same place, which was used as the “Danish-German Academy” from 1967 and expanded in 1982/83. In 1999 the Danish state gave up the academy and sold the house to the city of Hamburg. A planned use as a hostel failed. Since 2010 the building has been operated by the association “Employment and Education e. V. ”for two educationally supervised youth living groups. Since April 2020, the building has been used temporarily for the time of the corona pandemic as an emergency shelter for homeless women by the Hamburg Altona district association and center of the German Red Cross.

Wooden chairs in Blohms Park

In addition to the already mentioned lion sculpture, there is an art installation in the central area of the park, which consists of five black, fan-like stone beams attached to the floor . This example of art in public space is not signed and is not included in any work list , the year of installation is unknown.

In addition to the small playground in the central area, which has a sandpit and a trough swing , and the playground with large equipment in the area of the eastern valley, there is a covered official barbecue area , which is surrounded by benches. There is also a table tennis table and an area for outdoor chess .

In the western and central area of the park there are massive, white wooden chairs that are anchored in the ground and are also found in the Alsterpark and Hamburg's Stadtpark . Otherwise there are several walled ensembles with benches in the eastern area of the park .
