The Sanitaspark opposite the honey factory on the Vering Canal

The Sanitaspark is a green area with a playground and integrated day-care center at the northern end of the Vering Canal in the Wilhelmsburg district in the Hamburg-Mitte district .

location

The park is located on a former industrial site between the industrial road, Fährstraße and Sanitasstraße the northern end of Veringkanals in Reiherstieg Quarter in Wilhelmsburg.

history

The Vering Canal was created in 1894 from a former drainage ditch. It was named after Hermann Vering, who ran a construction company with his brother Carl and was involved in the construction of some port basins in Hamburg. The brothers were not only engineers, but also investors and so after the construction and completion of the canal, former fallow land was sold to industrial companies. The current building of the honey factory is one of the first to be built there. It was built in 1906 as a margarine factory on behalf of the Mohr company from Altona and is now a culture and event center with many other projects. The name honey factory comes from the honey company Gieseke, which used the buildings and workshops after the last war and moved to Bremen in 1977.

Sanitas AG, namesake of the neighboring Sanitasstrasse, was located on the site of today's Sanitaspark - a company that manufactures toilets and sinks for luxury liners and other hygiene items. At the northern tip of the canal was a large hardwood store that burned down in 1985. A day-care center then moved onto the site and a small playground was created for the first time on the remaining area.

From industrial site to park

Connecting footbridge on the Vering Canal between the Dursun Akçam bank and the Sanitaspark

Today's park is part of the overall landscape planning concept Veringkanal green corridor. On the east bank, areas should be made available to residents and users of the district and access to the water should be created and redesigned if necessary. The concept also included a connection between the formerly nameless green area of today's park and the neighboring Dursun-Akçam bank directly along the canal, and the impulse project Steg am Veringkanal was created. In 2005 residents and users of the district were surveyed and were able to participate in the design of the green area. Children between the ages of 8 and 13 from the “Kinderkultur Honigfabrik” were asked separately and could also express their wishes regarding the playground. This is how the idea for a district park with a playground, quiet areas and a footbridge along the canal for future park visitors was born. A landscape planning office developed a concept in 2005 and the redesign began. The Wilhelmsburg local committee was able to vote from five shortlisted proposals for the name of the future park. On July 15, 2006, the park was officially named Sanitaspark and the park was inaugurated with a district festival.

Distribution and equipment

The park has several entrances: on the north side of Industriestrasse , on Sanitasstrasse next to the day-care center, over the street Am Veringhof and over the footbridge built in 2006 on the Vering Canal . A water-side gap in the walking and cycling path along the Vering Canal between the park and the Dursun-Akçam bank was closed by rebuilding the footbridge, which is illuminated at night, around an existing building. The footbridge lighting integrated in the railing is not only eye-catching, but also ensures safety, especially for cyclists in the dark. There are benches with a view of the canal on both sides of the jetty. The central point of the park is the large meadow. When designing the toddler play area, particular emphasis was placed on a maritime connection to the water. In the large sandpit, light blue climbing hills in wave form, some with an integrated slide and ropes, are placed in between large pieces of wood - optically based on driftwood - for climbing and balancing, as well as a bow with a mast cage for climbing, swings, slides and rocking animals. For older people there is a large climbing net, a climbing wall, a larger slide and a turntable. An illuminated multifunctional sports field is located opposite the footbridge. There are numerous well-tended benches along the paths. The large meadow offers numerous opportunities for sports and leisure activities or just to lie down or have a picnic.
