Baakenpark (Hamburg)
Baakenpark

The Baakenpark is a multifunctional park with an area of around 1.6 ha on the Baakenhafen basin on Baakenallee in the east of Hamburg's HafenCity , which is intended to do justice to all residents of the new Baakenhafen district and users of the park. The Baakenhafen district is currently (2018) still under construction, some buildings and houses are already finished, others are still under construction or in the planning stage. The Baakenhafenquartier should become a socially balanced, urban quarter in which residents of all ages should feel comfortable with Baakenpark as a green center - students from the neighboring university, senior citizens, pupils of the future primary school on Lola-Rogge-Platz, children, employees and employees of the surrounding or future companies and visitors.

history

Information board for Baakenpark

The approximately 1 km long former Baakenhafen basin was built in 1887 for the operation of seagoing vessels. It was used to handle goods and there was a railway connection. There were many cranes and storage sheds on what is now the area between Baakenhafen and the Norderelbe . With the introduction of the container in the 1960s, port handling shifted to the container terminals further to the west, and the function as a storage location was also less and less in demand, so that port operations were later completely discontinued.

As part of the development and redevelopment of HafenCity, the former port area will be transformed into the Baakenhafen district, a place for living, learning, working and spending free time. In 2012, HafenCity Hamburg GmbH launched an open space planning implementation competition for the planning of the Baakenpark. Framed by the already completed Elbtorquartier with the Lohsepark , the HafenCity University , the Baakenhöft and the Elbbrückenquartier, which is also still in the planning and development phase, the Baakenpark, which was already finished and opened with a big party in May 2018, is the green center at the Baakenhafen between Baakenallee, Petersenkai and Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz in the Elbbrücken district, which is still in the planning stage . Opposite the "Himmelsberg" the new Gerda-Gmelin-Platz is being built, and the new Lola-Rogge-Platz with another elementary school and daycare center is planned directly on Baakenallee .

To enable the connection to the Hafen-City, the Baakenhafenbrücke West - a road and pedestrian bridge - was opened in 2013 and another was built for pedestrians and cyclists. The Baakenparkbrücke leads from the future Gerda-Gmelin-Platz on the north side directly into the park. The park can be reached by public transport from the HafenCity University underground station and the Elbbrücken train station, as well as the Baakenhöft bus stop.

Construction of the park

The "Himmelsberg" in Baakenpark

Over four years, the Baakenpark was built, an artificial area on the north bank of the Baakenhafen basin was raised, levels of different heights were created, paths and slopes were laid out for barrier-free use, games and sports areas were built. A particular challenge was the "Himmelsberg", an approximately 14 m high vantage point on the north bank of the Baakenhafen basin and the park's landmark. A time-lapse video, published by HafenCity Hamburg GmbH on the shz.de news portal, documents the construction of the artificial peninsula.

The "Himmelsberg" standing directly in the water not only has to withstand floods, ice formation in the water, debris or contact with boats must not damage the structure. The mountain consists mainly of light-colored Elbe sand, reinforced and secured with special geo-grids . Above that there is a separating fleece that allows rainwater to pass through but does not wash out the sand. There is a layer of topsoil under the rolled turf, which is held in place with steel grids. Planning, calculation and statics come from the engineering office Steinfeld und Partner mbB from Hamburg. There are wooden benches and two trees on the mountain. The mountain can be accessed via a staircase with around 40 steps and offers a view of the Elbphilharmonie to the west, a view of Rothenburgsort and the Elbbrücken train station to the east, and later of the planned Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz, to the north of the wholesale market halls and to the south a view over the northern Elbe.

Distribution and equipment

Football field

The park was laid out at different levels, with the lowest level in between, the Inselweg, which leads around the park. The higher sports and play level can be reached both via stairs and inclines and is therefore barrier-free. The viewing platform of the "Himmelsberg" can only be reached by stairs. There are no sports or play equipment on the lower level, it is used for recreation and relaxation. There are large wooden stands, benches or chairs and sunbathing lawns for sitting or lying down. The large wooden stands are suitable for sitting or lying down, sunbathing or as a grandstand for small concerts or film screenings. On the bank of the west side is the island balcony, a large wooden stand directly on the bank with a view towards the Elbphilharmonie. On the higher sports and play level there is a small soccer field, a small street ball field, the “Treibgut” playground, fitness equipment for young people and adults and an open area with three swings. So far, some trees have been planted in the open spaces, but they also serve as a lawn, picnic area or area for various outdoor activities such as gymnastics or yoga. There is another open space on the lower level directly on the shore. On the south side of the park there is an approximately 100 m long asphalt runway. Entrances are at the Baakenparkbrücke - it leads directly into the park and connects the southern bank on Petersenkai with the northern bank on Versmannkai and the future Gerda-Gmelin-Platz - as well as on Baakenallee. Construction is still going on on both sides and much is still in the making. The “Treibgut” playground was designed by children and consists mainly of wood. Several wooden houses, the interior walls of which have been designed in different colors, offer variety for climbing and playing. Slides and a swing for smaller children, a climbing wall, gymnastic bars and lots of wooden beams for balancing are also part of the equipment. There are several trampolines for smaller children on a green hill that can be crawled through.

Use and situation during neighboring construction work

The park was officially opened in May 2018 with a party and a large supporting program and is already fully usable despite neighboring construction work. There is not yet a real entrance on Baakenallee, but there is an access. We recommend visiting the park via the new Baakenparkbrücke, which is barrier-free and can also be used by cyclists. With the opening of the Elbbrücken station in December 2018, another underground station was added to the HafenCity University stop, and the S-Bahn station a year later. At the future Lola-Rogge-Platz on Baakenallee, a four-tier elementary school and a day-care center for 200 children as well as a family center and market square are planned in the current building lots 94 a – c right next to the park. Extensive construction work is also planned on the water surface, where six filigree water houses are to be built by 2023. The future Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz will be built at the eastern end of the Baaken basin. For all completed projects and their users, the Baakenpark is already the central focus and green oasis in an emerging district.
