The Wilhelmsburger Rathauspark is a public green space in the Wilhelmsburg district in the Hamburg-Mitte district . It was designed in 2014 and opened on December 15, 2015.

Location, name and size

The park is located next to and behind the historic town hall (today the Wilhelmsburg customer center of the Hamburg-Mitte district office ) on Mengestraße and is delimited and enclosed by the arched exit from Bundesstraße 75 . The "Wilhelmsburger Rathauspark" borders on the " Wilhelmsburger Inselpark ", but is an independent park.

It was named after the historic Wilhelmsburg town hall , which is located in the park. The name "Wilhelmsburger Rathauspark" already appears for the designated area in the land use plan from 1959, without having been an official park at the time.

The "Wilhelmsburger Rathauspark" has an area of around 1.6 hectares .

Emergence

In the course of the preparations for the International Horticultural Exhibition , there was a comprehensive revision of the land use plan for Wilhelmsburg. Among other things, it was decided to convert the previous area around the town hall into an independent park.

Wilhelmsburger Rathauspark with open spaces and old trees

The accompanying publication to the urban development and open space planning competition carried out for this purpose explains:

“There are some imposing and formative trees in the Rathauspark, so that structural measures would intervene in a valuable tree population. An intensification of open space planning is to be planned under tree protection aspects. "

- Living for everyone in the middle of Wilhelmsburg , cooperative, urban development and open space planning invitation competition with an upstream and integrated participation process, section “Wilhelmsburger Rathauspark”, p. 21

This means that the "Wilhelmsburger Rathauspark" has no attractions, but primarily serves to protect the trees.
