Am Sandtorpark / Grasbrook is a quarter of the HafenCity district in the Hamburg-Mitte district . In the west it borders on the Am Sandtorkai / Dalmannkai district , in the east on Überseequartier and in the south on Strandkai , in the north the historic buildings of the Speicherstadt form the structural boundary. The surrounding streets are Am Sandtorkai , Am Sandtorpark , Großer Grasbrook and Hübenerstraße . It is the only part of HafenCity that has no direct access to the water, but there are still views to the Sandtorhafen . The quarter was built between 2003 and 2018 on an area of ​​5.7 hectares and has a mixed usage structure of residential and commercial. There are also infrastructural facilities such as a primary school with an attached after-school care center and a thermal power station .

Urban planning

To the north of the quarter is the eponymous Sandtorpark , which forms the eastern end of the open space axis that is defined by the basin of the Sandtorhafen and the public square of the Magellan Terraces in the west. The park is bordered on its north, east and south sides by seven to eight-storey buildings, while a thirteen-storey office tower marks the eastern end of the axis on the east side. To the south of the ensemble around Sandtorpark are two point houses and a solitary, elongated structure as well as the building of the thermal power station.

The Sandtorpark is surrounded by offices in the north and east, and a so-called Commercial Center is located in the south. The quarter was largely built on the former site of the NKG Kala Hamburg coffee warehouse . The company initially planned to use the area until the beginning of the 2020s, which is why development would only have been possible after this point in time. After the company was able to find an alternative property in Wilhelmsburg , the areas were released for development early in 2006. The first building in the quarter was a branch office of the software company SAP . In 2006, the German headquarters of Kuehne + Nagel followed as the second completed project. The Coffee-Plaza project was created to the east, and the foundation stone for the center of the coffee trade was laid in 2008. A project that brings together roasters, retailers and related businesses in the coffee sector in one place. The opening was in October 2010. A passage parallel to Am Sandtorpark street became the “Coffee Plaza” and a sculpture in the form of a coffee bean was set up. It comes from Lotte Ranft.
