A rinsing field is a field for the deposition of washed-in sediments . The most common purpose is the storage of excavator excavated , for example when dredging rivers , or the seabed, which is sucked up to maintain coastal waters such as the Jade Bay . The dredged sludge , which consists largely of water, is pumped into the rinsing area via flush pipes. The solid components are deposited in the rinsing area, the water flows off. Therefore, on the one hand, a rinsing area must have an efficient flow, on the other hand, it must not create a strong current that would carry the sediments out again.

As soon as they have dried out, full flushing areas can be used, for example, as agricultural land or even as building ground. Likewise, the washed-up sand can be mined and sold privately as construction sand. On the one hand, it should be noted whether the soil is sufficiently firm and even for processing. On the other hand, a possible pollution load must be checked, because depending on the origin of the drilling fluid, contamination is possible.

When building modern sand core dykes , flushing fields are also created. The old dike is slit open, and out of the clay soil two Spüldeiche be built. Then sand is rinsed into the rinsing area produced in this way and profiled to form the sand core with bulldozers . The clay of the flushing dyke is then covered over the sand core with excavators in order to ensure the watertightness of the new structure.

Areas in which soil is deliberately deposited for the purpose of land reclamation or conservation are also referred to as rinsing fields . In the course of the construction of the Jade-Weser Port, around 45 million m³ of sand have to be flushed out. In Voslapper Groden in Wilhelmshaven you will find a large rinsing area that is built on land that has been extracted in this way. This protects the only German deep water port in Wilhelmshaven from silting up. The sand obtained in this way is currently still in private use.

At Peenemunde there are a number of Spülfeldern.

The Altenwerder rinsing area , which was made of contaminated material and was created on the site of the former village of Altenwerder in order to create expansion space for the Altenwerder container terminal in the port of Hamburg, became known. In 1983, Joseph Beuys planned a planting as an art project Gesamtkunstwerk Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg , but this was not realized.
